CD-R burning w/Sony DRU-500A DVD+/-R(W) **cross-post**

I picked up a DRU-500A last weekend and I'm having no luck with CD-R burning right now....... I keep getting Power Calibration Errors in Nero 5.5.9.17.... :(

Imation 32x 80min CD-R :: 3 attempts @ 24x - 3 failures; 1 attempt @ 20x - 1 failure.

Phillips 40x 80min CD-R :: 2 attempts @ 24x - 2 failures; 1 attempt @ 20x - 1 success

Sony 32x 80min CD-R :: 2 attempts @ 24x - 2 failures

Has anyone had any luck @ 24x with this drive?? What does it mean when I get a Pow. Cal. Error?? Simulation burns work fine.... The drive always dumps out during the lead-in... it takes over a minute and then dies.... it doesn't even appear to write anything to the disc, although on 1 of the Sony's I saw a VERY think line at what appears to be the outside of the TOC section of the disc.....

Try different burning software, just to make sure it isn't Nero.
Otherwise you might go crazy trying different media.

I personally have only burned DVD-Rs with it, so I can't provide you with any specific details on CD-R burning with the drive, sorry.

The same thing happened to me as well. I was burning 48x Imation cd-r with Disk-At-Once write method and got the power calibration error thingy. Just change your write method to Disk-At-Once/96 and it should work fine.
My imation cd-r burned at 24x.

What's the difference between Disc-At-Once and Disc-At-Once/96?

by any chance you are using third party ide driver? like via ide etc? if so you gotta goback to default microsoft driver.. this solved all my problem.

DAO-96 means that the full 2352 bytes of data in each CD sector are written directly as presented by the burning program, rather than the regular way of writing MODE-1 data discs where only the 2048 actual bytes are supplied by the program and the remaining 304 bytes of CRC, addressing, etc are supplied by the drive itself. DAO-96 also allows the burning program to write 96 bytes of subcode channel data with each sector. DAO-96 is used mainly for defeating copy protection, although it also has usage in creating some of the more esoteric CD formats.

In general, writing in DAO-96 should be avoided because it can lead to extra errors on the disc. It shouldn't have anything to do with power calibration, so I don't know why writing in DAO-96 mode seems to have cured your error.

I have no idea why either. But using DAO-96 seems to keep me from getting the calibration error. Maybe there is a bug in this Nero version (.17) that we should let Ahead know of.

Btw the audio cds I burnt using DAO-96 played just fine.
