dru500a competitors?

read that nec will be offerring competitive drive in dec. article relayed
rumor that it would be much better. any comments?

any other competitive releases in near future?

to be more specific, a competitive device which burns
-r/rw and +r/rw

It was supposed to be better because it supported 4x DVD+R writing speeds. This was before the DRU500A also supported this. Without anyone actually seeing or testing NEC's drive, its all up in the air right now.

MSI and TDK are also expected to have Dual RW DVD writers within the next few months too. No one knows for sure what drive design these will be based on.

well -- it seems im talking to myself. here is an update a sony/nec feature
comparison. the important bit -- the software -- is still missing. with the
latest firmware update, it seems they're roughly hardware comparable.

with the lukewarm feelings concerning sony sw, im thinking of waiting
until i get a clear picture of nec's offering. any opinions?

If you need a DVD burner now, then get the Sony. If you want to wait, then wait.

That review looks pretty pathetic, having the 4x DVD+R firmware released now would surely not have anything to do with the 4x spec only being finalised very recently?
