Sony has done it again. The Playstation 3 will be getting support for BD-Live by the end of the month.

Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that the next system software
update for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system, slated
for release in late March, will add Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) Profile 2.0 or
BD-LIVE, enabling PS3 owners to experience interactive features, such as
downloadable video content, ringtones, games, and more. In addition to
BD-LIVE, the system software update (v. 2.20) will enable photo and music
playlists on PS3 to be copied to PSP(R)(PlayStation(R)Portable) handheld
entertainment system, among other new features. These updates demonstrate
how PS3 continues to evolve as a home entertainment hub with the
flexibility to deliver the newest technology innovations that benefit PS3
owners.

"With Blu-ray established as the high-definition optical disc standard,
more consumers are ready to jump in and take advantage of everything the
format offers," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing,
SCEA. "Whether you want to download movie extras, send ringtones to your
phone, or play interactive games, BD-LIVE will offer exciting new ways to
enjoy a Blu-ray movie. With these regular firmware updates and
future-proofed technology, SCEA is making the 10-year lifecycle of PS3
possible."

BD Profile 2.0 requires an Internet connection and at least 1GB of
local storage. The following features have all been demonstrated as
possibilities with BD-Live and will vary by movie title.

-- A variety of downloadable content can be offered, including bonus
scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to
mobile phones, images, and more.
-- Interactive movie-based games can pit players who are sitting in the
same room, or are across the world and online, against each other.

I really need to go out and buy a PS3. :-?

Sweet! Of course we knew it was going to come sooner or later, after the PS3 BD-Live demos at CES. Nice to see they are releasing it sooner, rather than later.

. I bet the standalone manufacturers are pissed as they're just about to release "BonusView" players.

I bot a 40GB PS3 yesterday, downloaded this update and installed it via a thumbdrive, don't have internet in the theatre room. Worked well.

Any tips for a new PS3 owner? Addons, games? Hows the Sony remote work? Do you need an extender/eye for it, or does it work with the included BlueTooth hardware? Picked up Resistance: Fall of Man, really cool. I had checked ebay first, but they were going for more than in a brick and mortar, especially the 80GB models #-o

The remote works through Bluetooth, and it's INCREDIBLE. I wish all remotes were bluetooth.

Get that thing hooked up to the net and download Super Rub-a-Dub

it's provided my friends and I hours and hours of goofy fun. It's surprisingly addictive. Also, Folding@Home is awesome.

For games, I like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Heavenly Sword is pretty good, but too short. I'm not a huge gamer though, so my game suggestions are pretty limited

Play DivX movies on it

Firmware 2.30 being released or already has, adding DTS-HD decoding, as well as the new Playstation store.

Got a Dual Shock 3 controller today, will be nice to have the rumble feature again. I suspect it will be hard on battery life though.

Yeah, I have to pick up one of those Dual Shock 3 controllers. The new audio decoding is certainly a nice feature also! You have to hand it to Sony, they're doing some incredible added-value work with the PS3.

The Dual Shock 3 is heavier than the the Sixaxis controller, in a good way. It feels beefier as a result, although I suspect the Sixaxis is sturdier than it's light weight implies. I haven't downloaded any game patches yet to enable the rumble function, both Motorstorm and Resistance have such. By the way, Motorstorm is a great game =D>

Nice, I need to pick up a DualShock controller myself.

Recently ordered a Nyko Frontman PS3 Wireless Guitar controller. Still waiting on it to ship. This is the only guitar controller for the PS3 that is compatible with BOTH Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

I've been playing Lego Star Wars on the PS3 recently, a real blast! The Dual Shock 3's rumble feature works fine with it, and didn't require downloading a patch. I'm looking forward to Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Batman, they are due this fall I believe.
