Media Compatibility With DVD Writers - Which Media Is Best?

PostPosted: Sun Sep 07, 2003 12:10 pm
by Ian
This info is spread all over the place. I figured it was worth putting a sticky up here, to help everyone find media that will work at 8x.

Here's the list of Plextor's recommended media:

Mitsubishi Chemical: DTR47U1, DTR47U5
Ricoh 8X: DRD-4XPC, DRV-4XPC, DRD-4XCW10, DRD-4XCW5, DRD-4XPC5, DRV-4XCW5, DRV-4XPC5
Taiyo Yuden: DVDR+D47TY, DVDR+D47TY5P

Please share your experiences and tell everyone what media you've found to work at 8x. Keep your replies short and simple. If you can, include the brand, the actual manufacturer and type.

Edit 2/19/04 - This thread started out focusing on the Plextor PX-708A. I've now opened it up to ALL DVD writers.

Verbatim 4X DVD+R (MCC.....002 ) worked for me at 8X.

Verbatim 4X DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01) worked for me at 8X.

TDK 4X DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01) worked for me at 8X.

Memorex 4X should work, since it is RICOHJPNR01 as well.

UPDATE: Memorex 4X DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01) worked at 8X as well.

Sotware used successfully at 8X
Nero 6.0.0.11
Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5

Not that it is a surprise, but Memorex 4X +R did burn fine at 8X with Nero 6.

7 mins 51 secs including lead-in and lead-out for 4.12 GB (out of 4.37 GB max).

Verbatim DataLifePlus 4X DVD+R, 5 pack with jewel cases, made in japan, reorder no: 43211. Made by Taiyo Yuden works at 8X.

Arita and memorex 4X DVD+R, made in Taiwan, identified as RICOHJPNR01, works at 8X with firmware 1.01, do not work with firmware 1.00.

Thanks.
That is interesting.
I will play my Memorex discs again when I get home, just to make sure.
I burned 2 or so at 8X with the PX-708A last night after burning mainly TDK and Verbatim before that.

OC-Freak,

Did you burn the Memorex with the same software as the Verbatim and TY media?

I just ordered some Memorex 4X because they were really cheap, but they are non-returnable, so I will just not pick them up in the store, which will in effect cancel the order.

UPDATE:
Not to worry - My order was canceled. I think they didn't want to stack the coupons even though the web site let me place the order, and it was initially in 'Delivered' status.
It changed to 'Deleted by Customer', which I definitely didn't do...

For once I am happy though, because when I got home, I noticed that 45 of the 60 Verbatim 4X I was planning to return (after purchasing the 50 Memorex) were MCC, which I want to keep, since I already have a bunch of Memorex 4X left...
I prefer not to put all my eggs in one basket.
I did test my two Memorex 8X-burned +Rs, and they play fine on my home DVD player...

I was going to cancel the order by now showing up within 24 hours, in which case they put them back on the shelf, but they did it for me, even though I didn't ask for it :)

I have more than enough 4X +R media, so I only wanted to buy more, if I returned some other ones...

Yep, they are all written by nero 6.0.0.11

Thanks OC-Freak.
That is interesting. I guess the US market Memorex 4X +R discs are from a different factory than discs sold in Europe.
Then again, I wouldn't be at all surprised if US discs from one merchant are different than those sold at another US merchant.

My Memorex discs came from the 25 disc spindles with the gray spindles.
Mine work fine at 8X, but I do like the fact that I currently have a good balance between MCC 4X +R (Verbatim DL) and Ricoh +R (TDK and Memorex) between my remaining discs.

Hey, maybe it's a good idea to add mediacodes next to the brands name, so we all know about which DVD's we're talking.

Has anyone used Arita's?? (Mediacode = RICOHJPNR00) At a dutch forum (Gathering of Tweakers), I read those discs can also be burned at 8x. Does anyone know????

i burned two bestmedia-platinum with that mediacode(ricohjpnr00), one with nero and the other one with alcohol, couldnt get anymore than 2.4x. :-?
i also burned two sony4x (MCC002), one worked fine @8x, the other didnt. seems like a software prob here allthough i used nero 60011 which seems to work fine with most users here...

uhh, burned 5 Platinum disks with 8x, but mediacode is the newer RICOHJPNR01. Aren't the 00 also 4xspeed?

dvdinfo only shows 2.4x for the ricohjpnr00 discs, i tried to set it to 4x using alcohol but only burned @2.4x.
are those 4x platinum marked as 4x on the case? the ones i tried have no speed rating at all on the box :\

edit:
btw did your RICOHJPNR01 burn @8x til the end, when burning these discs it slows down at ~3gig to 4x and stays there. i tried alcohol/nero/new firmware -problem stil there, dunno if its the media or a software prob...

Yes, they are labeled "4x Speed" and they burned with 8x til the end. All [full] Discs finished in ~8 minutes with nero or DVD Workshop. Pi/Po with KProbe is also "acceptable" :)

Anyone try Ritek 4x DVD+R?

Just curious if anyone has tried Ritek 4x DVD+R in the drive. Does it write at 8x?

I just found out that the TDK 4x DVD+R media now for sale at Best Buy (for the incredibly nice price of $189.99 for 100 discs) is Ritek media, so I would definitely get this drive if it wrote those at 8x.

Also curious about the Ritek G04 DVD-R? Do those write well at 4x? I like my Sony DRU-500A, but hate that it doesn't write those at 4x reliably.

I have the TDK 4x 100 pack from best buy, the PX-708A can write at 8x without any problems. I must warn you though, the quality of these discs varys from disc to disc. Using the PX-504A I have found about 7 discs in the 100 pack that will only write at 2.4x.

That's good to know. I've just made it through my first 100 pack of the TDK media and all wrote at 4x on my Sony DRU500A drive. Have been very happy with them (and their price)!

Thanks for the information. I need to look into this Plextor drive now ...

That is $1.50 per disc, which is not a good enough price for my blood, since I have bought the Memorex for as little as $27 + tax for a 25 pack without any rebates.
Verbatim 4X media (+R and -R) is even cheaper when the specials hit (slightly under a buck + tax per disc three weeks ago on special).

Those TDKs were $129 + tax for 100 a few months ago on sale at BestBuy.
I actually returned one of my two spindles, because I found Memorex 4X +R even cheaper than that (25 for $27 = 100 for $108 + tax).

These specials are every week or so, for the last month or two.

thegdog: yeah ritek(ricohjpnr01) 4X (arita, tdk, memorex, ritek, traxdata and many more), mcc and ty writes at 8X.

No ritek G04 do NOT WORK with the PX-708A. It writes to 18% and then returns a track following error.......

Tried 2 different batches of ritek g04 discs as well, same problem

hi folks, i am trying for 4 days to burn a dvd to my new px-708a, i was reading all the goods about px-708a at this forum , with the plexdrive i was buing 5 DVD+R47TY5P (1x-4x) Thats-Taiyo yuden, 4 of them destroyed from px-708a with nero 5.5.10.45 and 6.0.0.11 i take this error log:
<<8:45:01 μμ#21 TRANSFER -27 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1534
Could not perform start of Disc-at-once. >> the last one i burned with easy cd creator 6 with data files and is only reading by the px-708a,
this before and after the updating to 1.01 firmware
WHEN i make a scan with CDVDINFO1.20 i take this result:
Type : DVD-R (General)
Certified Write Speed:1X-2X
Manufacturer ID : TYG01
Does anybody now if this is correct ? because the dvd outside write DVD+R47TY5P (1x-4x).

Anyway i burn today my first buckup Dvd with one Verbatim
Type: DVD-R (General)
Certified Write Speed: 1X - 2X
Manufacturer ID : MCC 00RG200
at 2x speed.
I am keep trying to find the Verbatim 8x or 4x and i am waiting for the answer of plextor support.
