I'm not saying that the tests should be done with a LiteOn. You're right- in most case you want to see how the burner reads its own products. But there's no reason not to use the quality test. Maybe a Pioneer or NEC won't give you extra data (yet), but you still have the transfer rate.

Used with, say, BenQ/Philips or BTC or NuTech or whatever (in addition to LiteOn of course), you get one or more of PI / PIF / Jitter (maybe even POF). And that is useful information for the person doing the scan at the very least.

Sure, these values aren't absolute and there will be differences from one model to another (and even between drives of a given type- see the c't results of CATS scans for 8x DVD+R media for NEC and Traxdata with identical firmware). But that's no reason to forego this information!

Personally, I will never buy a drive that does not offer additional diagnostics.

I think the information given in those PI/PO tests is far too deceiving! Too many people don't understand what it really means, and to be honest, I realy have to wonder if it has any significant value at all. I think this will become more apparent in the next little while as more information comes out, and more comparisons are done between consumer drives, and professional equipment.

Plextor PX-712a and Maxell 4x

I just got only 4x performance on my 712a with Maxell 4x DVD+R blanks.

This is in an ADS USB 2 enclosure through a carbus adapter. That is not a bottle neck though because my 52x cd burner runs full speed through it without a hickup.

I just posted my comment on the best Taiyo store and price that I have found here.

I have a Memorex True Image 8x (1.12 firmware), and while I know it is not the best burner, I was surprised that Nero 6.3.1.10 had about an 8-10% failure rate with Verbatum DVD+R 8X media, unless I drop to 4x after which there were no failures. After going through about 400 of these Verbatum's, I switched to Taiyo bought first from Meritline, then from CDDimension.com (see other post for problems) then from MediaSupply.com which is my best recommendation on price delivered ($298.50 for 200 in 50/cake including shipping).

How do you identify Ricoh and Mitsu discs if it's not written on the packaging? The TY Made in Japan, usually has frosted center. But what about these other brands?

:D By the way, I just read that whole locked thread that is linked in the sig. of dolphinius_rex. I'm not sure who is right and who is wrong and at this point I don't really care. All I know is I have the red wrap packaged Ritek Ridata 50-pack (purple burning surface) and have only made 2 burns (both flawless) and have 48 to go. It looks like these should last me a while. 8) ...............well, at least until I do some data backups.

edit: let me now say that two burns didn't work of same movie, but that was my fault. So, now I have two flawless burns. 8)

My findings with Liteon 451S.

dvd-r Ridisc 4x Ritek G05:
00000000 00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 86 0E 11 .j...@....R.....
00000010 98 9A 80 00 03 52 49 54 45 4B 47 00 04 30 35 00 .....RITEKG..05.
00000020 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 02 00 06 08 12 11 ................

Plays well on Liteon drive, but my Samsung HD935 cant handle movies written on these discs. My guess is too poor writing quality. On the other hand my gf:s United dvd player reads these movies ok.

dvd-r Traxdata 4x Ritek G04:
00000000 00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 76 0E 14 .j...@....R..v..

00000020 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 06 08 12 11 ................

These discs burn well with liteon 451S, no problems with data and movies play well on Samsung HD935.

dvd-r Arita 4x Ritek G04:
00000000 00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 76 0E 14 .j...@....R..v..

00000020 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 06 08 12 11 ................

Same as above work well on Liteon 451S and Samsung HD935

LG 4120B.

00000020 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 02 00 06 08 12 11 ................

Work well on LG4120B and movies on Samsung HD935. Burn speed only 4x with LG.
