Bestbuy, Futureshop, etc not selling DVD±RW as much anymore?

What's going on? I went to look for any sort of DVD rewritable media at BestBuy and Futureshop and found the 10 and 25-spindles and such were nowhere to be found. All I can find now are 5-packs in expensive cases. I remember easily finding and buying a 25-spindle of rewritables for like $17 last April, what's happened since then?
Fortunately, local computer stores still sell 25-spindles for something like $18-25.

Last I looked, my local BB had 25-packs of Memorex DVD+RW discs...but I think they were 2.4x :o

Most local stores around here (NE Indiana) don't even carry 4x RW discs, let alone 8x ones...

I just gotta ask: why do you need 25 packs of RW discs? I only have one RW disc, and it hasn't seen the light of day since the 8x DVD burner days...

Data backups? I perfer external HDD's or DVD+R's, since they're cheap...

i got a 25 spindle of 4x DVD+RWs a while back, but a 10-pack would've sufficed. the 25 spindle was easier to come by.

Rewritable discs are useful in my set-top DVD recorder, we can fit between 1 and 6 hours of standard definition TV on a disc. They're also useful in moving large amounts of data around between computers. 4x DVD, even when you consider writing and reading back later, is still faster than a 10 mbps network, and cheaper than USB flash drives.

I think that answers you question- most people would now buy a hard-disc recorder and not bother with rewritables. So the demand for large packages will have dropped. For other purposes (I use them for test burns and some data transfer) you only need a few- 5 is lots.

I still like to use DVD+RWs, Verbatim only, for image backups with Nero BackItUp.
The first DVD is bootable and has the restore app, so I don't have to fool around looking through other hard drives and their partitions to restore from a complete meltdown of the OS partition.

www.futureshop.com has lots of spindles of 50 or 100 dvd's.

16x Fuji 100 packs are on slle for $29.99 CDN online.

Perhaps its just your local Winnipeg store that doesn't sell enough volume (of bulk packs) to warrant the shelf space. There's 4 stores in Winnipeg.

I either buy now (back to school sales) or I wait until Boxing Day sales (usually start on Christmas Day). I bought 2 spindles of 100 +R's last Boxing Day. Fuji & Maxell.

Ahh, buck, you are correct.

That should teach me to read more closely. Especially when I'm @ work, like today. (In my defense, I was distracted by my Caledonia involvement yesterday).

www.staples.ca sells a 10 pack of +RW in jewel cases for $18.44.
Item Number 565445
They're Staples' own brand though.

They also have Imation 4x +RW 5 pack for $12.23. Item Number 561361

or a 30 spindle of Verbatim 4.7GB DVD+RW, 4x, Branded for $39.85 item # 624176

even www.blankmedia.ca has avery limited selection of RW discs now.
