Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs with Defects

As much as I'm losing faith in Taiyo Yuden's ability to make DVD media, my faith in their CD-Rs has been nothing short of unwavering. However today something unexpected happened...

I had ordered some stock of TY CD-Rs for my office, a mix of Silver Inkjet and White Inkjet printable discs. Unfortunately, the shipping guys decided to put both in one box mixed. Now if you've never seen an unopened spindle of silver inkjet printable Taiyo Yuden beside an unopened spindle of WHITE inkjet printable Taiyo Yuden, I can tell you that with the plastic spacer on top of the media, and the cake box between your eyes and the printable surface of the top disc.... the silver can look an AWEFUL lot like the white!!

So rather then be shocked later when the customers get pissed off for getting the wrong product, I opened each spindle to personally inspect the media (being the conscientious dolphin that I am). Well, I have to say I was shocked and ticked off to see those top discs a little closer!!

I've included 3 pictures that I took of 3 different discs. Unfortunately, the scratched printable surfaces on the silver inkjet printable discs did not turn out visible on my camera's pics. But out of 6 spindles, only one did not have a screwed up disc right on top. And one of the spindles had a pin prick like hole of missing inkjet printable surface on EVERY disc in the spindle!!

It's really unfortunate though... as there is no viable alternative for Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs :( But I thought I would share this experience with you!

I thought it wasn't actually TY who applied the printable surface to the discs (in the case of the hub printables) but it was a 3rd party. Then again, you'd be the one to know for sure.

Hrm Taiyo Yuden claims to do it all themselves. But there is a good chance that their hub printable media (not this stuff) has it's surface printed by the same company that does the packaging of it, which is done somewhere in china. I *THINK* the company doing that is actually Taiyo Yuden's chinese office, which was supposed to become a manufacturing plant also, but wasn't able to meet Taiyo Yuden's standards, or something like that (actually, if they tried again today I'm sure they wouldn't have any problems meeting their own standards... whatever they have left of them that is!! )

There is deffinately a difference between the printable surface of the regular printables, and the hub printables.

I appear to have one batch of Fujifilm CD-R for Photo (TY) that has a very minor defect, too.

Attached are the best pics I could come up with my crappy webcam. As you can see, there is some sort of v-shaped defect, if you can even call it that, where the dye layer ends.

I have no idea if this has any signifigance at all, but I thought it would be worth posting.

More and more I'm convinced they only viable backup option is two external hard drives...
