Whoa! Major TY media Snafu.

Yikes. Put a blank (TY 8x DVD-R) into my 111D, and heard noises you don't want to hear a burner make.

Popped the disc out, and here's what I notice (a little late):

It's hard to tell from the crappy pics from my crappy Sony camera in my crappy light, but the disc is alot thicker than normal.

Is it me, or does it look like there are three pieces of plastic making up that disc? Edit: Yup, three pieces #-o

Nice one, TY.

Bonding issue, maybe? Doesn't seem to want to come apart...

Edit: Opps...it DOES seem to want to come apart after all :o
Bonding!

Sadly, I'm not surprised in the least by this. Taiyo Yuden has been going downhill a lot lately, and I've heard of several instances of discs coming apart like you just had happen. Luckily the bonding is only so bad that the disc seperates in your drive or while being taken out of a jewel case in the most extreme cases.

Still, I don't use Taiyo Yuden for important stuff anymore, simply because I can't trust it like I used to. I now use Acro Circle 16x DVD+Rs, Verbatim 8x and 16x DVD±Rs, and Maxell BQ 8x DVD-Rs (in order of importance from least to most). Taiyo Yuden has completely fallen off my use list!! :o

I haven't been using them that much anymore. Mostly Verbatium DVD+R 16x media, and now the Scratch Proof TDK 8x DVD-R's.

I can maybe understand the normal bonding issues - bad glue, whatever. But come on, three freakin' pieces of plastic on this disc! Not two like it should be. That's more difficult to screw up.

Is that a spacer that slipped into the jewel case (like they often put on the top of a spindle)? That still doesn't speak for their QA system but could explain what's going on.

I like to know if you have any preference among the Verbatim 8x and 16x DVD±Rs
regarding the real manufacturer: Prodisc, CMC Mag or MBI ?

And this according to the distinction explained for example by lordyu here:

I generally prefer Verbatim made by CMC. I do *NOT* like Verbatim made by Prodisc. MBIL is more middle ground.

Are the TY CD-Rs still good? Is it just the 8X DVD-Rs single layer from them? :o

I've seen a lot more defects on TY CD-Rs lately as well, but nothing NEARLY as bad as with the DVDRs. I would say all Taiyo Yuden DVD±R media is affected though.

These came off of a spindle. The jewel case was just to sit it on while photographing.

It was bonded to the disc pretty good, too. So I don't think it just got "stuck" during packaging.

In that case, I'm glad I still have a 100 CD-R spindle in a half of the 1160s from last year still handy. If the CD-Rs are that bad, I may be buying Verbatim when I run out. Of course, I'll come back here and check again when it's time.;) Thanks man! :D

I still have a huge stock of these genuine Taiyo Yuden
sold "in the old days" under the Maxell brand

DVD+R 4x with MID code "YUDEN000-T01-000"
Image
The indications on the disc itself are:
inner hub: 6B417 N0543 9PB
outer: TS00075 - 0804
(The ones ne I have are not inkjet printable like on this photo)

I hope that in these old days of 4x certified DVD's the bonding of TY was still good !

Hrrrm, not sure. I know the Maxell 4X DVD-R (not+R, like you have) TY Bonding sucks. Strangely, no other brand seemed to have that problem, but I've read a lot of problems (Search around these forums) that Maxell's batches of TY had some issues.

I have no idea about the DVD+R variant, though.

Hmm maybe then they finally fixed the bonding issue ? Oh now that one is pure random so the bonding was good in this case but just a even more crazy screw-up.

I've seen TY cd-r's with problems luckilly not much and it was solved out nicely. However I have to say I still will recommend TY over verbatim cd-r's based on the testing data. It seems that there is no good replacement for TY cd-r's. So let's hope they don't fuck these up to much.

frank1 wrote:I hope that in these old days of 4x certified DVD's the bonding of TY was still good !

No TY's bonding problems with DVD media go back to 1x dvd-r and why they did slightly improve things the problem still is there.

Also that fuji disc that splitted in my case when taking it out of the case was a 4x TY DVD-R disc. So 4x media is not more safe. But so far I did have more luck with bonding of 4x +R media but also there the problem exists based on multiple brands and unbranded media.

Like I said earlier and I think it's infamous in the community I had a FUJI 4x DVD-R splitting. I can say that the problem seems to exists with all TY media.

That is correct. Much of the Verbatim media is made by CMC.

Or rather, it WAS. It's more MBIL now.

I still haven't seen any MBIL Verbatim media in the US. Still mostly CMC and Prodisc around here where I am.

DatalifePlus CD-Rs is all made by MBIL right now, none of it is Prodisc, and CMC can't make it because of licensing issues. As for DVDR media, CMC is used much less for manufacturing for several reasons. Prodisc again can't be used because of licensing issues. So again MBIL is getting the orders.

Well, I think they're better then Prodisc.... but I don't have much experience with them yet, so right now I have a hard time answering that.

I would say worse as CMC but better as Prodisc at the moment.
