Verbatim 6x or 4x DVD-RW media? Alternatives?

I have read some post on here and cdfreaks.com that seem to indicate that the Verbatim 6x DVD-RW media are some of the best rewriteable media available. However, I cannot seem to find anyone that is selling them.

If someone has had success purchasing or using these, please reply where you found them or if you recommend any alternatives---I would really love to find some quality 8X DVD+/- RW--that is if they burn well in the drives i use below.

I have also heard some good things about the Sony S11 media, but only the MIJ discs.

I own (2) DW1640s, a 165P6S, and a nec3500.

Only 8x DVD+RW available are Ricoh and Ritek.
So if you want to go high speed, 6x Verbatim RW is the only way to go. :)
4x Verbies are ok too, but slooooow.

I only know NCIX.com for companies selling Verbatim 6x DVD-RWs in Canada. Maybe check Meritline.com or Supermediastore.com ??

are the Ricoh 8x DVD+RWs Ricoh brand with Ritek MID Ritek 008 or is there a Ricoh MID ?
is there such a thing as Ricoh-branded 8x DVD+RW ?

ok,
just verified it on the three sites for verbatim 6X dvd-rw media:

NCIX - verb 6X -RW single jewel case only, $3.81 each...OUCH! :o

Meritline -- nothing, nadda, zippo, zilch.

supermediastore -- nothing, nadda, zippo, zilch.

rima.com -- lists a 15pk cake box, but no info on which part it is.

so, can anyone recommend an alternative? any MIJ stuff? 4x is fine, as long as I can reburn the disks a lot.

There are Ricoh branded 8x DVD+RWs with a RICOHJPN W21 MID. I bought a 10-pack from SVP.co.uk.

They are compatible with more of my drives (and my recorder) than RITEK 008 media. I use it mainly for fast transfers from my HDD/DVD recorder to my PC, but I have also tested them in some DVD burners: BenQ DW1655 , LiteOn SHM-165P6S and Pioneer DVR-111L.

The burn quality is also fine IMO.

Well, if you're going to go for 4x, then Verbatim 4x DVD+RWs (which you can get in 30pks) are probably your best bet. The Sony MIJ are maybe even better, but they are harder and harder to find.

I think the Verbatim 6x DVD-RWs will be going on sale for ~$2 CAD per disc on Thursday at NCIX also.

has anyone ever purchased from cyberguys?

here's the link:
http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/sear ... ctID=10093

$1.65 in quantity is not too bad of a price. but don't know how reliable they are.

also, one other link here:

http://www.computergiants.com/items/one ... 9572&aff=1

$1.29...however, the pic they show is the 2x-4x media

Various B&M outlets such as Staples and Circuit City stock Sony RWs. You'll have to take a look at your local stores' stock to see if they have MIJ stock. You're going to want to look for the 4x DVD+RWs, because the DVD-RWs are 2x, and rarely MIJ. Keep in mind if you don't find them on sale they'll be quite expensive.

As [Buck] said, you need to go in store and take a look. Only the DVD+RWs are really worth getting. The DVD-RWs are 2x only, and I haven't seen any MIJ either.

thank you DrageMester.
right now svp doesn't have them listed on the DVD+RW page.
are the RICOHJPN W21 better than the RITERK 008 in your opinion ?

That's too bad.

Yes, I think my RICOHJPN W21 are better than my RITEK 008, but that's based on only a single disc of each - but burned in multiple drives.

The RICOHJPN W21 are certainly more compatible with current drives than RITEK 008.

It's entirely possible that this is a result of poor firmware support and not an intrinsic quality difference, because my NEC ND-4551A manages to burn the RITEK 008 very well.

So,

I ended up buying the Verbatim 6x dvd-rws from Cyberguys at the $1.65 price. here are some cd speed quality tests: (1) from a liton 165p6s and the other from a benq dw1640. If these discs last even 1/2 the 1000 writes that Verbatim quotes, then I will be very happy w/this deal...

Ian/D-Rex,

thanks for the replies. So, for curiousity's sake, do either of you work w/ +/- RWs enough to know when discs are starting to degrade? What would show up on a quality test as evidence of this?

I really couldn't say. I tend to scratch my discs before they have a chance to actually degrade that much.
