Second-tier Taiwanese makers, Optodisc Technology and Prodisc Technology for example, have frequently taken the initiative to cut prices to compete for OEM orders for CD-R and/or DVD+R/-R discs, the sources indicated. However, Optodisc is expected to stop production because the company will soon be forced to delist from the stock market due to serious financial troubles, the sources noted. This is probably the major reason behind the easing off or ending of price-cut competition, the source pointed out.

Uh-oh, it looks like Fry's Electronics will have to find a new primary source for their crappy house brand recordable DVD's.

Well, according to my contacts at Optodisc America, they are removing themselves from the stock market, but the rumours of their demise are greatly exaggerated.

I spoke with a couple people there actually, and no one seemed even a little worried about the company quitting DVDR production/sales.

Thanks for the report. Unfortunately, American divisions don't always know exactly what is going on at their respective Taiwanese parent company, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if this really goes anywhere...

I have SLIGHTLY more faith in Optodisc America knowing enough about their Taiwanese head office to make that call, then I do about Digitimes not being paid off by some competitor to spread heavily spun versions of half truths.

Unfortunately, Digitimes seems to like posting half truths more often then complete ones. I can never completely trust anything they say anymore.
