Hi,
Which external harddrive should I buy out of these?:
Maxtor
Lacie
Western Digital

All of them is the same price, and have 250GB 8MB cache 7200rpm firewire/usb 2.

I have used internal maxtor hdd and it was wack, I have never used or seen a Lacie so I dont know if they are good, western digital internal hdd is pretty good (have 2 WD).

So which would you recommend, help me please
THX

Or should I put out 40$ more to get a 300GB but with only 5400rpm and 2 mb cache on a maxtor ???

Is 5400 too slow with 2mb cache ???

Hi...

it depends... I would say that a 5400 rpm drive is more quiet that a 7200 drive. I use a 5400rpm 2MB 160 GB Samsung as secondary drive in my computer (first is a 180 GB 7200 8MB IBM) and the samsung is used for storing mp3, finished dv video clips waiting for mpeg encoding, mpeg clips waiting for dvd burning and so on. The drive is fast enough for burning DVD+R at 12x (~ 16 MByte/s) directly from the harddisk without buffer underrrun. And i hardly can hear it and compared with my ibm it's about 1/2 to 1/3 of the noise of the ibm => it's really quiet. This is also the reason why i use the same type of drive in my digital tv pvr (Topfield TF5000).

Regards,

Gerd

I would just recomend buying an internal drive and throwing it in an enclosure, save tons of money.

More like the worst drives on the market. Three out of four 60GB Maxtors that I bought a couple of years ago have died.

A 540MB WD I bought back when those were the biggest on the market is still going strong. Same for a 120GB, 4 40GBs, a 1.2GB, and an 8.4GB.
Maxtor+IBM are the only HDD's I've had that have died. Seagate+WD only for me, from now on.

Grab a WD and don't look back. Oh, the Lacie's, they're Maxtors.

Keep in mind both Seagate and Maxtor have announced new drives that should push prices down. Seagate will be releasing a 400GB external.
The Lacie drives over 300GB are multiple Maxtor drives.

Those Hitachi drives are actually IBM drives. AKA Deskstar or better known as "Deathstar" in the past. Nobody really knows for certain if the problem with the hard drives are fixed or not. You would have to take some chance.

Do I have to install a software to the computer everytime I want to use the external drive ???
I thought it was "plug-in and play".

Im helping my cousins alot with computer and all, and im sick of burning all the time even though I have dvd burner.

no software needed if win me or newer

unless it has like a one touch backup feature, then software is usually needed

I like the Western Digital external hard drive if you can live without the one touch backup feature.
