I bought a 400 MHZ computer from an auction last night, it was password protected so i am going to reformat using some version of linux i think. I am downloading Peanut Linux right now. Any better ones for the same price? (Free)

I like Mandrake Linux. Haven't tried Mandrake 9.2 yet, but DO NOT use it if you have a LG Optical Drive in your system.

RedHat used to be the mainstay, but everyone at work uses either SuSE or gentoo, with SuSE being more popular.

Why can't you use Mandrake 9.2 with LG optical drives?

I agree; Mandrake is a good version of Linux. I've used it, and it's very easy to install. The only thing I know of that's not good is that it runs pretty slowly on my two Celeron 366MHz machines (but it runs fine on my Athlon 1.2GHz.

If you want to experiment a little bit with Linux before actually installing it, give Knoppix a try. It runs entirely off of the CD; you just boot off of the CD and there it is; no installation or hard drive modification. It's a great way to try out Linux. It also has many apps that are "pre-installed", so you can do a lot with it.

Well, that's a good reason!

I can hardly believe that the Mandrake 9.2 installer is destroying those drives.

I have debian linux on my xbox and mandrake 9.2 on this pc.I know that mandrake hasnt caused me any problems as of yet. All 5 burners in this computer work fine in it.I dont have a LG though.It is true there have been a few cases of the LG drives dying due to Linux.Mandrake 9.2 is very easy to use.Much more user friendly than redhat 9.Diabolic Linux runs from CD too as I have used it before.You can even run it on a modded Xbox.

What level of experience do you have?

Lycoris (www.lycoris.org) has a GUI that "plays" in a similar fasion Windows XP and is gui installed, loads right into gui, etc. If you're feeling a little more adventurous try Libranet (www.libranet.com) which is based on Debian but the learning curve isnt' nearly as steep.

I have 0 experience with linux. I installed redhat 9 and it seems to be working pretty well, sorta slow on a 400 though.
