I have a Liteon DVD burner, XP and Windows Media Player 9 on my home PC. I assumed this would be adequate software to "play a DVD" in my Liteon 411S, but NO! Does media player have no DVD decoder built-in?What software should I install?

I'm trying to play a DVD disk after making a backup using DVD Decripter, DVDShrink and Nero Express (component of Nero 6 Ultra Edition) to burn it. The original disk won't play either.

If you see anything else suspicious or stupid, please speak up. My older Apex AD-600A home stereo player does not like the first disk I tried to burn. The Apex player sits in the "Initiate" mode forever...it seems confused. I've heard the Liteon does not like DVD-R disks, but that's what I've tried so far. I don't know if my Apex hates minus disks too?? I downloaded & installed the latest Liteon flash firmware, just yesterday.

You need a MPEG-2 and AC3 decoder installed,didn't your Lite-On come with PowerDVD or WinDVD?

As for burning DVD's visit www.dvdrhelp.com or www.doom9.org and d/l latest patch for Nero at www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

Nero 6 Ultra Edition contains a program named "ShowTime" that will play your DVD.

It's free and at least for me, it's the best out there. It can do anything and more of what all those commercial products could do.

You might also want to try this codec pack:

If the site is down, google for "SLD Codec Pack". Also the most comprehensive and least troublesome codec pack. XP MPlayer should be able to play DVDs normally, so maybe you have a codec issue.

is Windows Media Player 8 on Windows XP supposed to be able to play DVDs "out of the box", i mean directly after a fresh install, without me having installed/downloaded codecs or whatnot?

i have a fresh install of WinXP, i tried to play a DVD in Media Player but couldn't, maybe i just don't know how.

I use WinDVD4. It came with my DVD drive.

I have Windows Media Player 9 installed, and it seems to be behaving itself OK. (I still prefer WinDVD for playing DVDs, though.)

My experience with the Apex AD-600A is that it doesn't read any form of "home-burned" DVDs.

I bought a multi-format burner a couple of months ago and burned 4 short sample discs on DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. None would play in my Apex. I took all four over to a friend's house, where all 4 formats played without problem in his newer DVD player.

My Apex will play VCD and SVCD on both CDR and CDRW, however.

After digging, I found there's a firmware patch to read recordable DVD disks of the type + or -R on an Apex AD-600A and there's a chance it'll never read -R. Thanks for heads up.

I bought a new $80 Panasonic DVD-S35 at Target that plays everything under the sun except Dvix. It is rated tops on several sites.

I will reserve my 'ole Apex for playing all regions and removing Macrovision for clean VHS copies. That's it's only real strength.

nope, you have to install one of the softwares with DVD decoders built in such as PowerDVD, WinDVD etc.

I think this is correct; you'll have to buy another program to play DVDs. I use WinDVD on my computer, and it seems to work fine. However, Windows Media Player should be able to play the DVD once you have installed WinDVD, PowerDVD, or another similar program.

There are many Codec Packs available out there in the web for free. Eg: SLD, Cole2k, Ace Mega, etc...

Most of the Codecs included in these packs are royalty free but sometimes they contain commercial codecs bundled without permission from the owners. Other than this issue they are perfectly safe to be installed. These packs save a lot of time and energy which otherwise will be wasted in installing the Codecs one by one.

(SLD is my favourite if you can find it.)

You likely don't have the right codec. What kind of video are you trying to view?

I actually got it to work, the issue was that it only works on moniter #1 of my matrox dual head card, in addition only 24bit color depth. For some reason in crashes on the menu, yet plays the video?

I don't have a dvd burner yet, can I just save an image of the disc to my harddrive and burn it later?
