Hey, I have some large Jpeg (2560 x 1920) and zip files that I'd like to send to my brothers computer,
I was thinking that an FTP (or P2P) would be the way to go as e-mail takes way too long and I don't want to make the pic size any smaller and loose quality.

So with an FTP program how do I get the files to him or how does he get them from me?

If anyone was wondering I have a Broadband connection and a 2.4GHz cpu

With FTP you need some server space to download the files to. Your broadband provider should have provided you with some space.

To get to it, all you need to do is type in "ftp://your_user@your_ISP.com" (double check with your ISP for sure) in the Internet Explorer Address bar, and it will ask for a user name and password, which you should have set up with your ISP.

Then you can just drag and drop the photos onto that space. Give your bro the username and password, and he should be able to see it and copy it to his PC.

yes this is an interesting question and something I keep pondering over myself.
It occurred to me that for larger files like say 200mb or 500mb then ones own sevice provider would not help?
What about the file sharing programs like e-mule and e-donkey and Kaza.
Presumably if your brother and yourelf both install say e-mule and you offer the said files for sharing and if the file names are only known to both you and your brother then he can download it from you.
I'm certain this would work but there must be a more professional way to do it?
I have also seen a program called www fileshare pro specifically for downloading files direct from someone else's computer but I have not yet tried it.

Well, if you really had to share 200mb over the web, you could set up a PC as a file server and allow someone else to ftp to it and download it.

But I'd just burn a CD or DVD and send it to them. Much easier and less risk.

Thats true but broadband is getting more popular and on the standard 512k broadband connection it only takes about one hour to download 200MB which is quick if you are considering whether to post a CD overseas.
The server idea is interesting although I have only so far tried networking two computers together off line. I must read up on this.

no compression, can set up for auto save pics, broadband setting, fast, IM chat, etc.

I lucked out in finding this one.

You can install a ftp server program, make an account for your brother, let him log in, preferably with a ftp client installed and download whatever files you will allow him access to.

A great freeware ftp server is GuildFtpd http://www.guildftpd.com/
A great freeware ftp client is SmartFtp http://www.smartftp.com/

It's possible to do it in reverse, meaning your brother will install the server and you will log in and upload to the account he will make for you.

Remember that the transfer rate from you to him will be limited by your max upload speed and his download speed regardless who runs the server.
