I am looking for good backup software that I can use to backup my hard drive on a DVD RW. I have a NEW 2500 drive, and I have a bunch of HP 4x RW DVD disks (I think that are DV+RW). I have been trying to use Powerquest Drive Image 7.01, but it says it can't write to the disks. I tried using Nero BackItUp, but I am not sure about a recovery environment (plus, it had a hard time writing on the disks as well). Are the HP disks probably not very good, or is it the software? Can anyone recommend a good drive image program, that ideally a) works within windows, and b) has a good recovery console (like a bootup CD or something)

I don't have a DVD burner so I can't help in that regard. However, I do use Drive Image for back up to CDs. You might try this: Take several CD-RW discs and erase them (as opposed to formatting the CD for packet writing). Then perform a backup image of a partition to those CDs and tell us what happens. If you get an error, try to note exactly where in the process that you get it and what it says.

I have been using powerquest(symantec now ) v2I proctector works great for backing up hard drive to images can also back them up to another computer on the LAN too or to DVD.

NERO also has an option for backing up but does it in its own file format

Yes, I was going to recomend norton ghost as well. FYI, it comes bundled in norton systemworks 2004 along with antivirus, disk docktor, speed disk, password manager, cleansweep, etc. Im sure you can buy a stand alone version, but just look at all the cool toys you get with the systemworks package!

Additionally, my CADD professor uses it to back up all of his workstations.

This won't help with backing up to DVDs or CDs, however, here is my backup solution: I backup my entire 40 Gigabyte Western Digital to a 60 Gig W.D. (which is in a removable enclosure- slides in or out of the front of my mid-tower) The software is part of Data Lifeguard Tools which comes free with a Western Digital retail hard drive. One of the items in D.L.T. works much like GHOST.
