FYI you'll lose some quality by doing so. Both formats are lossy.

You could convert them to a wav file then re-encode as a MP3.

had to d'load the plug to actually play the .aac file but I couldn't convert it with winLame. It wouldn't even recognize .aac files.Nero won't recognixze it either.Winamp plays it ok but it looks like there are some quirks with this format on windows.

I've heard that, too, but I have no first hand knowlege. Anyway, the conversions, of course, remove some data that takes up a lot of space, but whose lack thereof minimally degrades the music. Which is the long winded way of saying that they hope that you really can't hear much difference, if any. However, they each, in their own way, use different criteria on which data to remove and if you sequentially perform both conversions it does matter. In so doing, you've lost two different sets of data and the combined deletions do noticeably alter the music.

Certainly, the effects vary according to the nature of the music. Hip-hop music is only degraded in a minimal fashion while real good music like that of Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings is totally destroyed. :P

Who is having trouble finding his Hank Williams (Sr.) 78s.

dBpowerAMP has an AAC codec:

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

Just nab the music convertor and the MP4 (aac) codec, and it should be fine.

I got some choice Hank stuff(no vinyl though).
This box set and every other hit he had.Check out this Luke the Drifter I found a couple of months ago.
When you find those 78's,why don't you convert them into cd's.It's real easy.I converted everything from Hank Sr lp's and singles to rare Jimi Hendrix.Sounds crystal clear.
