Dear all,
hi.I would like to know your views on which is the better windows.
Win XP SP2 or Win Server 2003 Standard Edition?I am speaking strictly in terms of performance on a P4 home computer.I am satisfied with networking features of Win XP,but does Win Ser 2003 offer better performance?I mean in terms of speed and gaming? :)
Waiting for some posts. Thanks in advance.

Windows XP.

Windows 2003 is tuned for a server environment (file sharing, etc) and probably will not perform as well as XP with desktop apps. Not to mention, 2003 has a number of services that you won't need. If you don't turn them off, they're just going to kill your performance. XP is also a hell of a lot cheaper.

Why on earth would you ever want to run Win2003 server on a workstation?

Well, just wanted to try it out. There are basically 4 editions. The edition with most little features is Standard Edition.According to MS,WS2003 is the best Server OS it ever developed. So I was thinking of giving it a try.
I was thinking of disabling the services that I dont need.

One reason one might want to use Server 2003 on a workstation is that there were a bunch of people who received an unsolicited full retail "not for resale" copy of Server 2003 free from Microsoft several months ago. If anyone is interested in using Server 2003 on a worksation this link may be of interest:

Maybe, according to Ms, the best OS they developed is Longhorn, or Bullhorn. You guys remember how 98SE was to be better than 98?

But honestly, the best OS I have seen so far from MS is XP Pro. As long as it gets the required resources, it will run steady. Win2003 is developed for Corporate Env / Data Center. It has many functions / services which makes it unsuitable for home use.

If you are into tweaking XP further, google for Black Viper / Sons of Liberty XP Service guides.

HTH + Cheers.
