Only in the latest build 2120. RC1, build 2096, is OK. In all honesty, you can get a OEM license for $75, no reason not to go legitimate.

I think it's a smart move by MS. It'll help keep the virus attacks down (hopefully) which could conceivably fund every pirated copy of XP based on operational cost savings alone.

He means that MS implemented some anti-piracy updates to the latest build of SP2 (2120) which followed RC1 (2096). It's blocking some key-gen'd keys as well as some legitimate ones too. These features were non-existant in RC1.

That's outrageous! Micro$oft has every right to protect their own software by whatever means they want to, but for them to decide what other software you can install and run on your PC is just wrong. Who elected Micro$oft judge, jury and executioner of all the world's legal systems?!? :x

I pay for all my software anyway (call me a sucker if you wish), but I still strongly object to this plan by Micro$oft. I guess this is another lost skirmish in the battle over who actually owns your PC. Have they all forgotten that the "P" in PC stands for Personal, not "Property of Bill Gates"...

Yes, against pirated WinXP keys.

As to activation cracks etc... shouldn't be a surprise. They are much easier to contend with than key-gen'd keys.

one more reason to add to the list of why I am running win2k pro instead of XP pro. I have XP pro and I ran it for a year or so but never liked it. I prefer win2k better. There will be cracks and patches for this service pack you can bet money on that. Do you have any idea the percentage of windows users that run illegal copies. It is extremely high. In my MCSE class it was estimated to be 30-40% of windows copies are pirated.Hell my instructor was giving people in class copies of win2k if they didnt have it but it was for "testing" purposes only and to be uninstalled after our class was over.

I've read that Widows piracy is over 90% in Russia and China and I have no reason whatsoever to doubt this.

Who, like cfitz, has no pirated S/W but has more 100% free AMIR than he can ever use.

Yeah, piracy is high here in India too.Nobody buys legal software if the system is assembled.People here usually get everything "free" from their dealer.
