how do i test/check that my mobo's USB ports are indeed functioning @ 2.0 ? is there some way to test it?

clicking "install USB 2.0 drivers" on the support CD of my motherboard appears to do nothing.

will applying WinXP SP1 or SP2 automatically install the required drivers for USB 2.0 (if they're not already there)?

sp2 ive found gives better indication if a usb device isn't functioning at its peak usb2 spec

it tells you as soon as you plug it in, this device could be performing better if you plug it into a high speed usb port

also you probably can give sisoft sandra a try for benchmarking your usb performance

If your motherboard is USB 2.0 capable, XP SP1 should load the correct drivers. I've heard that it is better to use the Windows XP SP1 USB 2.0 drivers than those that come with the motherboard CD. Also, Hox is correct if you stick in a non 2.0 device in the port and it tells you that it is not 2.0, that is an indication that it is 2.0 capable as the 2.0 drivers have been installed.

If you have and Intel board, look at USB controllers under Device Mananger, it should indicate 2.0 if installed.

do you mean an Intel chipset based board, or an Intel manufactured board?

how do you mean?
on my Asus Nforce2 board i get:
Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
- Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
- Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub

do you mean that on one of these lines it would specifically say USB 2.0 instead of just USB?


i have to check into it, but from memory, in my father-in-law's computer, there were some yellow ?s in the Device manager...which is why i wasn't sure the correct drivers were loaded for USB 2.0 (when i tried to install the USB2 drivers from the support CD it gave some kind of message like "install SP1" and did nothing...)

what i had originally meant was, is there some way to check the version of the drivers or something like that to see that it is indeed USB2.0 and not USB1.1? and that the USB2.0 drivers were loaded and functioning properly.

that sounds like a good way (assuming the mobo's USB2.0 drivers are indeed OK) to test if a particular device is indeed a USB2.0 device or just USB1.1.

you can also just download the latest chipset drivers from intel, just go to there website and tell them which chipset you have and then download the latest INF Chipset Driver:

Mine says 2.0, specifically, in Device Manager where yours says "Enhanced", which should indicate 2.0. I have some notes at home, check them later.

After the install, look under OPERATING SYSTEM, then SYSTEM DRIVERS, you should see what you want, version # etc..

as long as it has an intel northbridge you can download and install the latest INF Chipset drivers from intel.com same goes for amd/sis northbridges

Mine says: Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Conroller - 24CD

Before I loaded the USB 2.0 drivers it said: ........USB Standard Universal Host....., or
....... USB Universal Host.....,

But I also think that one time after I loaded the USB 2.0 drivers it said:
Intel(r) PCI to USB Enhanced Controller

Then look, using Device Manager, at the drivers. If you see usbehci.sys and hccoin.dll (among others), then you have 2.0 installed.

now i remember seeing these names inside the instructions for manual installation of USB2.0 drivers on the support CD. apparently when clicking on "install usb2.0 drivers" it recognized that, since i've installed SP2, usb2.0 drivers are already installed and thus did nothing. nothing means also it didn't say it was doing nothing

I loaded my drivers in SP1 when I lnstalled my 2 USB devices a Printer and Logitechs Optical Trackman(red ball) both are USB 2.0.

If you have Win XP SP2 installed on Intel chipset motherboards you have USB 2.0 installed and enabled.

I dont know about AMD's,as we have very less machines from AMD.
