Is it possible to re-name (label) optical drives in Windows XP Pro so that these labels show up in Windows Explorer?

Thanks for any replies!

do you mean drive letters? or the name of the drive as it appears in My Computer?

for 1 use computer management.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management. then right-click a drive -> Change Drive Letter and Paths

for 2 go to My Computer, right click a drive -> Properties, in the General tab you have a box for the drive name.

ok for situation 1, how do you change the hard drive letters?

it says: Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume

see everytime i install windows, which is going on my 80gb SATA maxtor it makes that one d: and my 250gb maxtor c:

i would like to reverse those letters

i'm no windows guru, but try this:
install windows on your SATA HD while the other (PATA) drive is not connected to your system.
i bet windows will designate the SATA HD as C:. afterwards when you install the additional HD it will be designated D:.
which you can later change to whatever you want. the system drive C: will remain C: (unless there is some way of changing the system drive letter, but i don't know of it).

I'm asking about how to change drive "Names", not drive letters, on optical drives. I have a DVD-ROM, CD-RW, and DVD-RW in my system. The names seem to change (I know they are suppose to do this when you insert media).

Changing drive letters is no problem as long as you follow dodecahedron's advice on only installing your SATA drive initially so that the OS install makes it C:\.

i know about unplugging the pata drive, ive done that before, but any other way after windows is installed

its a little annoying when you have to unscrew 14 thumbscrews just to get into your case to unplug a ide cable or power cable

hox,you can try disabling the PATA drive in BIOS and then re-enable it after you install Windows on the SATA drive.

I really like Award BIOS for the features it has over AMI BIOS.The interface is very user friendly IMO.
