I remember Win Me did encrypt zips, I can't get XP to do it

Basically my subject covers it.

Is there any way to get Windows Explorer to make encrypted zip files?

Win ME doesn't encrypt files that I recall. You must have had some sort of added software.

Try 7zip. It's free and works great.

I'm pretty sure I never added anything. You'd right click on the zip and the encrypt option was there.

I still have Win Me in another partition.

I still use Pkzip 2.50 but this 7zip looks good, I'll try it out. Thanks!

I really like (love is kind of a strong word for software) IZarc. It is a really nice freeware program.

do these freeware programs (7zip, IZarc) do only zip archives or rar archives too ?
self exctracting archives ?

Yes, both will do RAR and make self-extracting files according to their home pages.
