I have tried about 10 different file renamer programs. This is one of the best I've found.

I found it from Impress software section.

Thanks for the tip, Kennyshin. You must have read my mind - I have been thinking about looking for file renaming software.

I always wondered why Microsoft's Windows Explorer doesn't let me do it in an automatic way. I actually had to rename over 10,000 files manually until I finally found a South Korean-made renaming program. Can't find it anywhere again after I lost that program on the now-dead IBM 60GXP HDD.

So I looked for renamer programs in a few places. CNET download had several. Impress recently introduced that one. I used Google.com as well.

Axistek has a program called Easy Rename.

$15 if you want to register.

Kennyshin, i wonder if you might help me out here:

i have a folder with (say) 20 files a0.pcx ... a19.pcx, and i want them renamed as a1.pcx ... a20.pcx.
can Flexible Renamer do this kind of renaming?
next:
a folder with a0.pcx ... a19.pcx, b0.pcx ... b15.pcx, c0.pcx ... c32.pcx etc... and want them renamed page1.pcx ... page69.pcx.
can it be done?

i looked around in the help a bit but couldn't find if it does this and if so how.

Dodecahedron, I couldn't figure out an easy one-step method to do it with Flexible Renamer. I got close, but kept running into the infamous string/number sorting problem: when sorting string representations of numbers, sorting is done by most siginficant digit rather than least. For example, 10, 11, 12, 100, 101, 102, 1000, etc. all come before 2 when sorted as strings. (That's why I try to pre-pend leading zeros when naming files.) I did come up with a method for doing it in multiple passes, but that is too much work.

A better alternative is the 1-4a Rename program you found. It works great for your application. Just check the "Replace" box, leave the top box under "Replace" blank, and type "page$" in the lower box. "page" is the base name you said you wanted to use, while "$" indicates 'number the files consecutively, using at least one digit'. ($$ would be two digits - 01, 02, 03, $$$ would be three digits - 001, 002, 003, etc.) It should look like this:

I think Flexible Renamer is more flexible and powerful in general since it has full regular expression pattern matching capabilities, but 1-4a Rename has its own strengths. Different tools for different jobs...

Thanks for telling us about 1-4a Rename. By the way, 1-4a Rename is emailware - free to use, but the author requests an email acknowledging your use of it.

thanks for checking up for me, cfitz.

yes, in 1-4a Rename it is very easy to rename all the files in a directory in sequential numbers file1, file2, ...

by the way, about the sorting of filenames issue, it's quite strange: (maybe you didn't know this because you use win2K): if i have filenames such as file10, file11, file100, file9, file2 etc., in win2K, win95, win98, they are sorted as strings, but in winXP they are listed in the correct numerical order!
in any case with 1-4a Rename this can be easily fixed even if not winXP, since you can add leading zeros, as many as you want, to all filenames so that they all have the same number of digits and and thus they are sorted OK.

my thoughts exactly.

and for the record, i didn't mention 1-4a Rename here but in my personal correspondence to cfitz.
the link is: http://www.1-4a.com
there's 4 programs there:

That sort of multi-step procedure is what I was forced to do with Flexible Renamer and was able to avoid with 1-4a Renamer. By the way, 1-4a Renamer has even more powerful sorting capabilities. The pull-down box in the upper right corner of the screen shot (surrounded by light blue and with '(n)ame' inside of it) contains a bunch of different ways of sorting files so that you can rename them in a variety of sequences:

Thanks for the heads-up, dodecahedron. The author seems to update that program pretty regularly, so maybe I should keep a closer eye on that site.

I have use Flexible Renamer a bunch of times, and have found it to be quite useful. I recommend it.
