320 kbps is the highest rate supported in the MP3 standard.

LAME supposedly can go higher if you use the --freeformat switch.

But do you really want to do this? If you do, you won't be able play back the files in standard decoders.

Here are some alternatives (not MP3) you might want to explore if you truly do need to satisfy your lust for encoding bandwidth:

By the way, cdrfreak, 2003, when you start a new thread please try to give it a title that is more descriptive than "help". In this case, you might have tried something like “MP3 encoding faster than 320 kbps?” Doing so will allow others to know what is contained in the thread without opening it (helpful for searching, etc.), will entice people who know something about your problem to bother reading your post, and perhaps even increase your chances of getting a knowledgeable answer. Many people will simply skip posts with meaningless opaque titles such as "help", "hey", etc. Nothing personal, but from here on I will be ignoring any threads you start that have such titles.

Read An introduction to MPEG Layer-3 by K. Brandenburg and H. Popp from the Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS). You will find that "For Layer-3 [MP3], the standard defines a range of bit-rates from 8 kbit/s up to 320 kbit/s." There is no such thing as MP3 encoded higher than 320 kbps. Anything you find that records at higher rates will not adhere to the standard and will not play in many/most players. I would advise you one last time to reconsider encoding your audio in a non-standard format. You may eventually find yourself with a bunch of files that you can't play.

By way of interest, here is a breakdown of the self-reported encoding rates people are using:

http://www.mp3-tech.org/polls/poll.php3?results=1

And here are some descriptions of preset quality modes for LAME:

For VBR modes (generally highest quality):

"--alt-preset standard" This preset should generally be transparent
to most people on most music and is already
quite high in quality.

"--alt-preset extreme" If you have extremely good hearing and similar
equipment, this preset will generally provide
slightly higher quality than the "standard"
mode.

For CBR 320kbps (highest quality possible from the --alt-preset switches):

"--alt-preset insane" This preset will usually be overkill for most
people and most situations, but if you must
have the absolute highest quality with no
regard to filesize, this is the way to go.

If 320 kbps is insane (one step up from extreme), then what would 640 kbps be? :o
