I'm using Windows 2000, and need to change the icons for my .avi/.mpg movie files. I changed the program to open them to WinDVD, but have changed them back to (the old) Media Player. Now Windows just shows the same icon for them that it does for files it has no idea what they are :(

TweakUI's Rebuild Icons doesn't fix it, either....

I don't use Win2000, but have WinXP on a dual boot. It probably works to same to fix/change icons.

Go to My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | File Types and scroll to the AVI and MPEG file extensions.

Click on Advanced and in the Edit File Type dialog, click on Change Icon and select or browse to the icon that you prefer.

Click OK and you're done.

Snag: for the mpg files, it only shows a "restore" option, doesn't have the advanced option so I can change the stupid icon. :(

Since you want Windows Media Player to be the default, did you try the Restore option? What happens?

If the Restore option doesn't work, try this:

In My Computer (Explorer) highlight a MPG file, *right click and select Open With | Choose Program. Highlight Windows Media Player, check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box, hit OK and see if this toggles the icon reactivation. If this doesn't work, try using Open With to browse and select another program, resetting the icon to that program. Then try changing back to WMP again.

*Win9x requires that the Shift key be held down to reset the default program using the Open With operation. WinXP does not. If you have problems with this in Win2000, try holding down the Shift key while right clicking.
