Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other thrift/secondhand stores are a great place to get computer stuff. I have bought a 300 MHZ computer for $10, a usb device cable for $1, and seen 17" monitors for less than $20.
We even got our Macs to smash at Goodwill

I found a whole 100 mhz PC with monitor for 40 bucks at my local goodwill, Baby AT case and great shape but slow - I later upgraded the motherboard and added a AMD K6-500 and gave it to a (broke) friend to use for basic gaming (mame) and websurfing.
The best deal was an old Panasonic VCR - they let me have it for 5 bucks! All it needed was a good cleaning and it worked another 5 years as my backup/copying VCR.
Saw your Lan Party pictures, what were you using to smash those macs? Looked like some kind of pipe.
