Any guess on who makes the Khypermedia CD-R drive? Looks like an Acer/Benq drive, could be wrong!

I have seen the drive but am not compleatly sure who makes it. My best guess is it could be a Benq if they replaced the front of the drive so it dose not have the row of slots on the bottom of the drive. The other posability is that it is a Top Glory Electronics drive.

I looked at the close up of the Khypermedia drive and it says "Seamless link" on it - good chance of it being an acer/benq drive. The CD-Rs are from Spin-X (CMC generics)

WOW!!! :o :o :o
That's a great deal on that Khypermedia drive! I wonder if it's really a Benq, though. According to Benq's web site, there is no 48x24x48x Benq drive.

Benq does in fact offer a 48x24x48 CD-RW drive, but for whatever reason they don't market it to our region of the world. Here it is:

http://www.benq.com.cn/Products/4824P2.XML

If I had to guess, I'd say Benq has more of these drives than they know what to do with, so even though they were meant for Asia the excess stock is being dumped here.

As you might imagine, many companies frown on this type of "gray-market" activity. When places can sell CD-RW drives for free (or even $10) after rebate and STILL make a buck, one can't help but wonder about the quality of the materials being used..... not to mention the working conditions of the labor force that produced the drives in the first place.

Well, you seem to be right, ZenMaster27. I bought one, and it appears to be a Benq. It looks just like other Benq drives I've seen, but it looks just a little different from the one in the picture in the ad. It came with Nero Express. It's identified as "ATAPI CD-RW 48x24" and has firmware D.LC. It doesn't seem to support Mt. Rainier, though. :( Oh, well, for free, I really don't have anything to quibble about. BTW, the buffer is 2MB.

I also bought the 50-pack of CD-R discs (they were Spin-X in my area) and here's the ATIP (Read with SMART-BURN Media Checker in the Benq drive mentioned above):

This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 26s 66f
Norminal Capacity = 702.82MB (79m 59s 71f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = CMC,Imation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X

I burned one of the Spin-X CD-Rs (rated 40x) at 48x. It was fast: 2:38. Using Nero CDSpeed 1.02, I burned a data CD in DAO mode. It started buring at 22.59x, ended at 49.74x, and averaged 37.82x. It was a CAV burn.

I then scanned the disc with my LTR-32123S at 40x using KProbe 1.1.9. Here are the results:

C1 Max = 60, Total = 26063, Average=6.210
C2 Max = 0, Total = 0, Average = 0.000

Most C1 errors were under 20, but the errors began spiking at about 78 min. So the burn quality was decent, even with the cheap media!

I would say that this is a great drive for it's price!

I got a LiteOn!

:D Here in Denver the Cendyne 52 X 24 X 52 Internals are Liteon's. After adding a $10.00 off coupon I received in the mail to the OM $30 rebate and the CenDyne $30 manufacturer rebate I'm out of pocket just $9.99 plus tax. The package comes with Nero 5.5.9.13 too. I'm happy.

I updated my KHypermedia (Benq 4824P) to firmware D.SC from the Benq web site (the original firmware was official Benq firmware, so I could just run Benq's flasher). Still no Mt. Rainier support. :( I then burned another disc (same kind as before) and I got these results scanning with KProbe (same as before):

C1 Max = 20, Total = 13334, Average = 3.120
C2 Max = 0, Total = 0, Average = 0

for anyone who bought the cendyne internal 52x24x52 burner: for the manufacturer rebate it says to submit the sales receipt (i bought it at OM and it came with a rebate receipt and the regular receipt) which one do i send to the manufacturer? also when i mail it, which should the first line look like?

CenDyne Rebate Offer 03-55800 or CenDyne Rebate Offer
03-55800

im not sure and don't want to mail it to the wrong place and not get my rebate. btw when it says must be postmarked within 15 days of purchase, does that mean they have to get my rebate submisson within 15 days or can i send the rebate out on the 15th day since i bought it?

I think that you send the "Rebate Receipt". That's why they give you a "Rebate Receipt", I think.

As for the mail to line, I think that putting it all on one line is probably right, but I am not certain. I would think that the rebate form would give some kind of hint. Either way would probably work, but I don't know this for sure.

I think that having the rebate postmarked at most 15 days after purchase means that you have to send it out 15 days at most after you bought it, but the sooner you send it, the better it will be.

I overclocked my free after rebate (not inc sales tax) KHypermedia 48X CD-RW drive to 52X last night.
The best part, is that for some models (Ricoh? chipset) no bin file is needed.
I just used the 52X firmware from the Benq site :)
It maxed out at 51.55X using Nero CD Speed and a TDK 700 MB 52X blank CD-R.
