Could very well be CMC. I know Value Disc CD-R's are CMC.

I went and bought a pack of these to take advantages of the rebates last Sunday. My Lite On CDRW identifies the discs as Verbatim with Smartburn 3.1.5. Smartburn limit of 4X.

That's what Smartburn identifies the manufacturer as. The packaging says Value Disc and the Rebate form identifies them as Khypermedia.

you gotta be kinning!
all these programs use the ATIP code. more correctly: ATIP Start Time of Lead-In. this is used to signify the manufacturer, and is unreliable as we all know.
you might say that SmartBurn is the most trustworthy program, since it at least tells you that this info may not be accurate!

Kinning? No, and not kidding either.
What bothers me is that SmartBurn shows "CMC, Imation" as the manufacturer for CMC discs even if they are not branded as Imation. Which is why I believe Jim may be confused. If the output reads "Mitsubishi, Verbatim" then I might have a bone to pick with that as well. The phrase "Disc manufacturer maybe" does not strike confidence in me.

SmartBurn does what every other program does. It reads the ATIP info. It is simply not Smart Burn's fault. While I use Nero CD Speed for checking who makes CD-R's when I first buy them, Smart Burn works fine. I only check whenever I buy new disks every month or two.

I never used any programs to check CDR manufacturers or write quality until I discovered this site. I ran one of those discs through Nero CD Speed and it identifies it as Mitsubishi (manufacturer).
If anyone wants me to test them in another fashion just let me know.

I believe Mitsubishi as the more likely manufacturer. I suspect SmartBurn lists the manufacturer as "Mitsubishi, Verbatim" which is truthful, but also a bit misleading. I have no major problem against SmartBurn, just in this instance it can confuse the novice user into thinking he/she has a disc manufactured by Verbatim, when in fact, Verbatim does not manufacture discs.

the best solution is to use more than 1 such program. they're all know to be wrong at times.

i agree with Wizard that SmartBurn, by adding the brand name to the manufacturer, can be misleading (this can only increase the chances of an incorrect output...any who needs the brand anyway? you see it because you have the disc in your hand!)

I feel bad for people with unbranded, silver top CD-R's that show up as "CMC, Imation" in SmartBurn. They are probably ecstatic because they bought Imation discs, when in fact, they aren't.
