If I have a wired internet router, can I just plug that Wireless LAN Access Point into one of the router ports and have a wireless network in my home then?

I think that's correct.

CDRecorder is correct a Wireless Access Point allows you to add wirelessy conected networked computers/laptops to a wired network.

And I spent $20 a few months ago to buy a wireless router to attach to my wired router. I know it sounds wierd, but I love my D-Link wired router too much to let it go.

I did exactly the same thing a few months ago (except that I paid $30 for the wireless router).

Oddly enough, wireless routers seem to be cheaper than AP's.

I've had bad experiences with certain brands of wi-fi equipment. So I mostly stay with Netgear and Orinoco stuff.

I paid like $80 for my Linksys WRT54G a few months ago. I love it, I couldn't use anything but Linksys.

my network setup:
Wired in my room: 4 or 5 port Linksys 10/100 router ($3.99), 2Wire Broadband modem/wireless built in, across house, other computer using a Belkin USB 802.11 adapter. Works pretty well for me.
