OfficeMax has an 8x DVD+RW for $79 after $70 IR and $50 MIR starting Sunday. Is this drive any good? Any idea who makes it?

that's scary, I see KHypermedia on top of the drive. If anyone knows, I'll be there bright and early Sunday morning.

The only 8x DVD+R writers I know of are the BenQ DW800A and the Nu Tech DDW081.

And the Plextor PX-708A, and the Optorite DD0401, plus Teac and Verbatium have 8x +R writers, I believe...

What I meant was +R only,as the ad shows.

No SKU #?

what's interesting about this ad, is that the OfficeMax ad shows a photo of Khpermedia branded CD-RW, instead of a DVD+R as in the description. That combined with the lack of a SKU makes it very interesting.

It's easy to think that at first glance, but they're showing the box for the $9.99 CD-RW, and just the drive for the DVD-RW -- two separate deals (notice the blue and red Khypermedia logo is missing from the tray on the DVD-RW drive).

I hate how they always angle the picture of the drive so you can't see all of the buttons, volume control, and headphone jack.

Good point. They do the hiding of the details of the drive on almost all ads these days.

From the little of the drive that I can see in the picture, it looks sort of like Benq's CD-RW drives. However, I am not 100% sure.

I stopped by an OM and looked at the empty box on the shelf.

The DVD drive is a Khypermedia, model KVDRW8X.

It burns DVD+R and DVD+RW, but not -R or -RW (reads everything, and burns CD-R and CD-RW).

Only one button -- tray open/close. Has a volume knob and headphone jack.

SKU is 2073-0176 (doesn't show up online).

optorite is a good brand right? I can only find a review here on an Optorite CD burner.
Although with OfficeMax, getting rebates honored is spotty at best. I feel like Paris Hilton, they've screwed me so many times.

I checked into office maxs last big dvd drive deal (again no name listed) only to find out the brand was different at each of the 3 stores I called. One was magic spin, one was mad dog, and one was i/o magic I believe

Checked out 3 stores, all Khypermedia drives :( Circuit City had LiteOn 411S for $69.99 after MIR, but no local stores had them either. :( :(

I picked one up at a local store in WNY and it was a MagicSpin Model R-DVDRW8D which I was hopeing would be the Optorite model. Upon inspection I quickly realized it wasn't the Optorite model but the label on the top of the drive listed TOP-G as the manufacturer. Doing a little research, I've determined that it appears to be the BTC1008M. The layout and logo arrangement is identical to the BTC drive and the new Creative 8X drive. The software included was Roxio 6 and Roxio Photosuite and PowerDVD XP4.
I'm debating if I'll keep it or not as the opinions on the BTC drive seam mixed. Does anyone know if I could use firmware from BTC on this drive? A plus was the manager of the store wasn't sure about which drive he was supposed to sell me (the MagicSpin was the only 8X he had) so he rang it up at $79.99 so I wouldn't have to worry about the rebate.
Last of all, if the fellow computer hobiest that I helped "talkout" of purchasing this drive (on a return visit to see if they had any other boxes) based on my disappoinment on it not being the Optorite reads this post he might reconsider it as the BTC doesn't seam to be a bad choice. :-?

They sold you the wrong drive! They should have sold you model KVDRW8X. The tech said that KVDRW8X is a brand new drive that is manufactured by CIS technology.

I stand corrected, after going to my local OM tonight...the drive on sale is a KHypermedia, not the Magic Spin as I was told. Not only did they not have the drive on the shelf, or anywhere, it took 3 people 15 minutes to find the thing in the storeroom. Heck, if I hadn't known it was on sale from here, I would never have asked. Does anyone know if what Papag said is correct? As soon as I saw KHypermedia on the box, I left.

I got a rain check! Good thing about a raincheck is you don't have to fight for the rebate! Someone said this is a Cyberdrive. For $79 it is a good back up burner/ Not $129. These rebates are becoming a scam. However, you can complain to Office Max and they may make it right! I am still waiting on the last Magic Spin rebate deal.

save a little more

Here's a coupon to sweeten the deal...expires tomorrow. I told them I got it via e-mail. I live in Chicago, so at least they believe it. You guys in SoCal can try it, it's not a regional thing.

You may want to Photoshop the list of stores out, or just trim it off.
