I thought they were using NEC exclusively, according to a post below. If so, it's a 2510 which can be had for about the same price, without rebate hassle from newegg.

It isn't an NEC 2510 if it is a 12x drive.

Ian, is this a CompUSA rebate or a Mad Dog rebate? If it is a Mad Dog rebate then you should really change the title to:

Mad Dog Dominator 12x DVD±RW - $110.36 after $20 instant rebate and $0.37 wasted sending in $30 mail-in rebate that Mad Dog will never honor.

For those who are new to this game, Mad Dog are just a bunch of theives and crooks who don't honor their rebates. I recommend you never buy Mad Dog because:

1. They will cheat you out of your rebate
2. Even if you don't personally care about losing the rebate, buying from them supports a morally bereft company and rewards despicable behavior.

It looks like its a CrapUSA rebate. Even then, I've had mixed results with their rebates. They're not much better than Mad Dog.

Mad Dog also, generally, rebadges bad products!

The best deal that I ever got at CrapUSA was a twofer on Canon photo paper, no rebate involved.

DOHHH! You're right, my bad. If it wasn't for their restocking fee I'd buy one just to see what's in the box. Is Mad Dog really that bad about rebates, or are people just repeating things they've read elsewhere?

....restocking fee............... That's another reason that I won't buy there un less I'm 100% certain.

Yes, they really are that bad. I have personal experience being stiffed by Mad Dog, as have others on this forum. And if you think you can protect yourself by making photocopies, sending you materials in with dated delivery confirmation, etc., guess again. I did all that and had full documentation that I had sent in what was required when it was required and in the manner required. But Mad Dog denied my rebate, claiming I hadn't registered my product on their web page. I had registered it, of course, and had the print-out of the registration confirmation. But all my letters, emails and phone calls went unanswered. Eventually I realized I was never going to get any response from them, let alone my rebate, and that it wasn't worth continuing with the hassle for $10.

I think that is their strategy. Deny your rebate (or just "lose" it) and then simply ignore all your efforts to contact them. It doesn't cost them anything to stall, and they know you will eventually get tired of wasting time and money trying to get a relatively small rebate.

I hated to let Mad Dog get away with it, but in the end I decided that all I could realistically do was try to warn others so they don't get ripped off by Mad Dog too.

Thanks for the info cfitz. I'm going to start a sticky thread, and copy and paste your text into it. I hope you don't mind.

Nope, I don't mind at all. In fact, I am happy you have chosen to do so. It increases the chances that others will be able to learn from my bad experience and save themselves the grief.
