This is probably the best HDD deal you'll find right here. CompUSA has the Hitachi Deskstar 200gb 7200rpm 8mb cache PATA HDD for a measly $80 after rebate (Comp is very fast with their rebates, got mine within like 3 weeks)... and I just bought a 160gb Hitachi SATA drive a few weeks ago for almost a $100. Damn my useless luck!

Thanks Boba_fett, I'm thinking about placing an order.

The warranty is great but I need a drive for backup storage in an external device. Anyone know if this is the old IBM line or did Hitachi improve the drive series?

Thanks

Since IBM backed out of the HDD business, Hitachi bought the rights to IBM's HDD trademark "Deskstar". These are still the highly dependable Hitachi drives that were available before Hitachi adopted the Deskstar monker.

Not just the right to trademark/name... :o  However, "DeathStar" problem may have been fixed. Ever since the "DeathStar" incident, I don't think anyone has used DeskStar series hard drives long enough to say whether the problem was fixed or not.

speaking of "death star", the problem was supposed to be fixed with firmware update; the problem was that the head was not stable when fixed in the parking zone for long time (no activities for long time), so what ibm did was to move heads in certain period of time; this is very annoying as my desk star is making head moving noise for every about 15 minutes or so.

mine is the current 250gb model; it seems fast but annoying & gets hot

I have an IBM Deskstar model IC35L120AV (120gig) about three or four times a day it makes a scratching type noise the computer hesitates for about 1/2 a sec. Is this the head moving? Is this normal and does it mean that my drive is NOT breaking down? It has been happening for a least a year and possibly ever since I have gotten it.
