Sony DVD-R Made In Japan is SONY08D1 which is probably made by Taiyo Yuden. Not sure what the Made In Taiwan spindles are. My Best Buy had both but about 10:1 were Taiwan.

I just went to best buy and picked 2 spools (made in Japan). All the 4X are made in Taiwan and the 8X in Japan. There are are lot of 4X and just a few 8X left.

Using the Nero Info Tool, the DVDs are capable of burning at 16X in my NEC 3500

I just got a 15-DVD spindle of Maxell DVD-R at Staples for $6.00, which works out to a decent $0.40 per DVD. These are made in Japan and the code is [MXL RG03]. I tried them on my NEC 3500, and they burned great at 16x.
