All,
I found a great deal. The Toshiba SD-R5372 (black) 16x DL DVD burner is available for $40 after rebate (expires July 31)! I have no knowledge of the reputation of this model. But that's cheap. Ian wrote a review of a predecessor SD-R5272 in July 2004. It concluded that it was a decent model, with some shortcomings. I noted that DVD-R would tend to write better than DVD+R for this model. Anyone have this model?
Right now, the Pioneer DVR-A09XL(A/B/C) can be purchased online for $70, after rebate (before tax & shipping). The rebate expires Aug. 31 and is applicable only for specific vendors. I found TigerDirect and Amazon with this pricing. You have to carefully check if their shown price is with our without the rebate.

You can buy Toshiba from
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827130034 for $38.99 shipped and you don't have to bother with rebate.

Yeah, but my SD-R5372V came in a SD-R5372 box. From the outside, there was no way to tell.

There's one shortcoming for this Toshiba model that I didn't realize earlier. It only reads DVD+/-R at 12x even with the latest patch. It writes at 16x. Still, for $40, it would be a good low budget choice.
The non-V has a firmware upgrade that raises it to the V spec, except for the DVD+R DL speed max. V: 6x write speed DVD+R DL, and non-V: 5x write speed DVD+R DL.

With the latest SD-R5372 firmware, I believe the specs are the same. Only difference with the SD-R5372V is that it supports DVD-R DL.
12x read for DVD+/-R is actually pretty good. Most drives read at only 8x.

In newegg.com the model number for both drive with V or without V have been specified under same sale therefore does differentiate between the two. BTW what is the deferent between these two drives?
