I was going to pick up a retail 1655 but I might have to take advantage of this deal too.

Is a review in the works for the 1655?

Do you or anyone else know what other drives may be in the I/O Magic box?

Yeah, dolph is working on one. I wanted a drive for my own testing.

I'm not sure what other drives I/OMagic could be using. I guess you could get stuck with the 1625.

They also sell the LiteOn version in thier new boxes so open it before you take it away. I'm going to check em out today too, like I need another burner

 it really is a illness!

I just bought the I/O Magic writer at Staples. The one box that I tried had a BenQ 1655 inside with a white face plate, no black spare..

The I/O Magic model number is IDVD16DLS. What appears to set this box apart from the other is that the DVD +R DL is rated at 8X...

Apply coupon code 66683 to get another $10 off. Final cost is $40 after Staples rebate.

Try coupon 32565 ( $20 off ) for the external drive, it might work.

If anyone else picks one up please post what you find in the box.

Very nice, I do prefer the black face plate. How did you find that out?

Thanks!

Well that makes 9 dvd burners  They had 2 on the shelf, one that just said LS DL etc, and one that said 8x DL etc. I couldn't tweak the box enough to see so I asked if they could open it to double check maker, she looked at me puzzled but I explained and no problem, saw the BenQ sticker, said thanks, I'll take it. One of the sales guys talked to me a bit about how nice his older 1625 worked and we compared notes, he managed to talk me into extended warrantee :o But hey it's only 7 bucks more for a supposedly no hassle upgrade for a extra year. I told him I dont break em, I just retire em.
Need to plug it in, move some stuff around, and see how it works, what firmware it has. Mines Nov 2005 made in China, I think it has the G bulk firmware according to the sticker now.

I couldn't believe this when I looked at the Kaufhof flyer this morning but it was real!! (this is a normal dept. store like The Bay in Canada).

So I picked up my first ever DL media: Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x, Photo Printable, Made in Singapore, 10-pack in jewel cases for € 9.99! :D:D Got the last 2 packs they had.

Normally you guys in the US (and Canada) get the good deals- but now it's my turn. Gloat. \:D/

Only problem is: I may need a new burner. :o A first test burn @4x with my LiteOn SOHW-1213S @ 1653S CS0T produced a write error halfway through. The second try @2.4x looks good, although burning and testing it tying up my system for over an hour and a half!

You think THAT'S bad? Try testing them on the PX-712/PX-716! That's a 3hour test for PIE, PIF, and Jitter/Beta per disc! (and I test a lot of discs  )

Well you've got at least 2 of those (and a mess of other drives) and I've only got my 1213S (although I came within an inch of going for an SHM-165P6S [-X after the 4x coaster).
