Thanks, Bill, always appreciate the headsup. :D

Better yet, it looks like all the back-to-school specials will be gone for a while.

They start them the weekend after the 4th of July as if school were starting in two weeks instead of tow months.

Lets hope some of the Sonys at Staples are TY. I buy those now whenever I get lucky and find them on sale. The Samsung 18x will even burn them at 18 with good quality and the rest of mine all do 16 with them with excellent results :D
Just remember to look for the octagonal foam spacers on made in Japan ones and they should be TY's, otherwise they could be Sony D21 or like that.

The funny thing is that for me, I'd be trying to AVOID the TY, and aim for getting the actual SONY product

Well I have to say its not quite as godlike as it once was but still pretty nice here. The d21 only seems to burn really well on my 1655 last time I tried it, probably thanks to solid burn. The Samsung made a colorfull coaster out of it when I tried it and the other drives do better but not oustanding. With all the new Firmwares out maybe its changed a bit, they released one for the samung too yesterday.
Hope to find some Plus media as some of these drives do way better to it.

You're welcome, Slim :D .

There haven't been very many media specials lately to get excited about.. Its been kind of ho-humm. I guess the manufactures are going to hold steady at this price level until production of the newer technologies increase and gets a better market share.

BTW- I just updated the first post adding a few more store ads.

Thanks for the tip :D Never could figure out how to tell the difference prior to the purchase..

You and Dolph have made me curious. Think I'll stroll over to the Media Forum to see if there are any longevity comparisons between TY and Sony media.

Probably.. Then again, it could be Sony NEC Optiarc. I might head over there later today and pick one up.

Edit: Here it is on Circuit City's website:

The drive on the box is definitely a Samsung...

I have the Samsung and it works OK, not oustanding. some media it writes horribly to, others it does pretty well but not BenQ or 111 quality most of the time. It will autobitset plus and 18x is about 5:20 to 5:45.
They just released a new FW that has helped it a lot with at least the true Sony 16x media I have that it made coasters to before. I wrote up my thoughts and a mini review at SPL if you guys want me to post the link to save time and typing.

Dartman, are you talking about the SB03 firmware that was released yesterday? I haven't given it a try yet myself.

Yep, the autoupdate thing they have found it for me and installed it so I figured I should try that Sonyd21 stuff as the drive totally wasted the first one I tried on sb02. Did much better with new update, haven't tried everything I have yet ....
A pretty good deal for 40 out the door, I paid 32 shipped at the Egg.
