Amazon has dropped the price of the HD-A2 down to $306.88. This is almost $90 off retail.

Wow...not bad!
I'd feel better with a combo player right now, though. And with the XBox's HD drive only $200, that may be a better option. But then, you have to add playback software to that price...at least with the PC drive you can rip, too

There's no way I'd buy an HD DVD player until after CES 2008. I'm not at all convinced the format will survive, but I think we should know one way or the other by that point.

I think there is still a good chance that both formats (HD-DVD and BR) can survive if the combo drives start coming out. We will have to wait and see.
Some of us remember some 7-8 years ago, when there was the DVD-R vs. the DVD+R vs. the DVD-RAM debate. It seems like they all survived. I am surprised that DVD-RAM survived and is still supported by many drive manufacturers.

The big difference thought, between Blu-Ray VS HD-DVD and the DVD+R Vs DVD-R, is that with DVD, there was a single, unified standard for video discs. The recordable formats, once recorded, were basically the same.
This is much more like the VHS vs Beta battle...
Personally, I'd like Blu-Ray for a recordable drive (higher capacity/speed), but HD-DVD for movies (easier to rip, theoretically cheaper).
