I don't really need another Optiarc, but at that price I may have to get the 7241S.

I wonder when Optiarc is going to come out with a new drive?

You think anyone is going to bother making anything faster for dvd burning at this point? I replaced my overheated 7240 a few weeks ago finally and it's working just like the old one minus the problem and is quite a bit newer build, don't know if they've changed anything though.
It is kinda tempting to get a 7241 as well, might be able to cross it over to a 43 and see if label flash AND Light scribe both work but probably wouldn't. As far as I can tell they all seem to burn the same anyways, never really used LS though I have played with LF and it was fun on crappy media to make picture disks out of them.

No, I think they're pretty much done at this point. The only thing they can do at this point is make them cheaper.

How did it overheat? Burn too many discs in a row? Case cooling problem?

It was a very hot day inside and out and I was testing the new 1.03 FW and it started throwing PIF spikes at the end and about a quarter in that were huge.
It was 90 in here at the time so probably should just have hung it up but once I noticed a issue I played around with it a bit more then decided to shut everything down and wait for the morning when everything would be cooled off. It was still throwing the spikes at a quarter in so I finally gave up on it and left it in place till I finally got another one recently. It worked great for over 5 months and none of the other 5 burners in here had issues with the heat. I have a stacker full tower with the front and rear 120mm fans plus the PSU has it's own 140 but it was a jungle hot day...
I have heard that a few other users have had heat issues after burning quite a few disks though it doesn't seem to be common, some the drive was fine again after it cooled off and others it stayed bad. Maybe it's just a issue with the first run of early drives as I got mine right after they showed up on New Egg and a few folks were trying to decide what chip it had. I'd still recommend the drive and my friend who builds systems and networks is selling them in all new builds without having any come back, he likes em too.
