DVD + - R/RW home DVD player help?

Postby NoSmartz on Sat Dec 13, 2003 1:06 pm

I am getting rid of my ancient DVD player for a newer one that can play DVD + - media.I went to my local fry's electronics store and only one model specifies that it plays all dvd media types. It was a Sony model. One other type says it plays only - DVD media and that was Toshiba.Every other DVD Player just has the standard"plays dvd/mp3/svcd/wma/jpeg etc...blah,blah.....They don't go into specifics. Is there anyone out there that can tell me about a model of dvd player that does it all besides a Sony? :o

The JVC XV-N55SL is a great DVD Player that will play all formats except DVD-RAM. Audio and Video quality is perfect, it plays all recordable formats, and the design is great as well. I highly recomend it.

Check out the $39 ones. Most of mine play everything. They were $29 on the Thanksgiving Blitz at Wal-Mart. Most of these cheap ones are progressive scan and have all the outputs.

I've heard from quite a few people about those cheaper DVD players and they all say the same thing,"they play anything you throw at em'".I've seen movies on an Apex and a Mintek and they both play good.Surprises me these bigger companies don't or "won't" support all formats.I just came back fron Best Buy and noticed something about hte JVC XVN series dvd players that they advertise. The label reads like this "plays DVD-R,DVD-RW,DVD + RW,mp3,svcd,jpeg,etc..But what it doesn't say is that it plays DVD + R.Does it?

Yeah, I think all the JVC's play DVD+R, I know the N55 does.

My friend had an Apex player, and it played DVD+R fine, then it broke, and he RMA'd it and got the same model back, it ended up not playing DVD+R, go figure. Your better off getting something like the JVC XV-N55SL where you know it plays all formats.

JVC and LiteON brand DVD players are always very good.... maybe because they are two branches off of the same tree :D
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

I'd like to chime in. Amazon has the JVC XV-N33SL for $78.99.
What's the difference between the N33SL and the N44SL? I don't see anything that makes it one better than the other. Anyone?

Update: OK, went to JVC.com and I found that the N44SL views JPEGs and the N33SL does not. LOL.

I have the super cheap APEX - 1225 which I got for $49 canadian at best buy. So far I have played

DVD +R +RW -R and -RW with no problems at all. I tried a DVD - RAM but if did not work.

The cheap ones actually use a dvd-rom drive I was told by a sony rep, hence their compatibility. The big players only let you play the type that they back ie. Pioneers the minus . They do not want to pay royalties or support the format they do not back. THe Philips which heavily support the + format however, will play the minus formats.

Boggles the mind why only 1 or 2 Major brands will support both formats publicly.Toshiba, which makes great dvd drives,- format.Panasonic, that I can see,-format.Pioneer,- format.Sony + - JVC + - .Non major brands Apex + -(sometimes),Mintek + -(I could get one of these for next to nothing but I'm sticking to a major brand).
Who wouldn't get confused with the research plodding through all the websites trying to find out what plays what. :o

I have a Samsung DVD-P230 Progressive Scan player that I got at Target for $69 a few months ago, and I am nothing but satisfied with it. It has played all the DVD+/- R and +/- RW discs that I have thrown at it, and it just feels so much more solidly built than the Apex(single DVD) and Go-Video (DVD/VCR combo) players that I also own. Just my $.02 that I thought I might add. :D

Just bought a Yamaha DVD-S540 to replace my Sony NS725P which wasn't totally convincing reading DVD+Rs. The Yammy can be made region free via the remote plays +Rs and -Rs flawlessly and apparently plays MP3 on DVD. I haven't tried that myself but there are those who have done so successfully. It also converts Pal to NTSC on the fly. I'm happy with it. The Pioneer DV-656A is one of my other players and is yet to refuse a DVD-R or +R regardless of brand used.

Absolutely correct. Cheap DVD players typically consist of nothing more than a stripped-down IDE DVD-ROM drive (usually by someone like Cyberdrive), and two circuit-boards, one at the back (video hardware, generally PC-based as well) and the front panel (usually just a few passives and a display, and even the display now is being left out of some cheap players -- who needs it anyway).

I will only buy cheap DVD players now due to their superior compatibility. And when I say that I'm not referring to Apex etc but truly non-branded stuff. Mustek are particularly good for compatibility, unfortunately they can be very unreliable.

I have settled on Yamada players for now, but I have a feeling this is a brand-name of Umax, a German company, and hence may not be available in the US.

Cheap DVD players are now at the point where they're only pennies more expensive than DVD-ROM drives. I recently bought a Yamada DVD-2500 for 26UKP inc sales tax; the Cyberdrive DVD-ROM drive inside costs 22UKP inc from my usual on-line reseller......

I purchased an inexpensive Audiovox portable DVD player. It also plays all of the formats I've tried (+R, +RW, -R, -RW).

It really blew me away when I accidentally placed a data disk in the drive. It displayed a menu (directory) of all of the MPG files on the disk. After I selected one, it played the file. I couldn't believe it.

The only drawback is that the audio is only stereo. (No six-channel output. :( )

But, all in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the little guy!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...
