Testing Lite-On LDW-811S and Plextor PX-708A @ 8x

Failing.

No 8x media available for this 8x writer.

(I haven't got this drive but my friend's testing it in Seoul. Just arrived from Taiwan.)

There's only 4x DVD+RW media bundled.

I am considering to buy one but I already spent over 300 USD to buy Plextor PX-708A yesterday.

I noticed that TLA# of your new 708A drive is 0102 .
Do you know any hardware change or difference in comparison with drive coded TLA# 0000 ---> 0003 ?

He already tried "overclocking" 411S to 811S, of course failed. :D

Someone from PCDVD Forum in Taiwan just reported that the Lite-On 811S cannot burn 4X DVD+R discs at 8X at all. Discs tested include:

Mitsubishi (MCC) 4X DVD+R
That's (Taiyo Yuden) 4X DVD+R
Ritek 4X DVD+R
RiData 4X DVD+R

If this is also confirmed by others, then there is no reason to buy this burner before the 8X DVD+R discs appear.

320,000 Won in South Korea, now available to end users. (1 USD = a little less than 1,200 Won.)

No media reported to write at 8x yet.

I can find this topic linked in the above-mentioned PCDVD forum. :D

1. What good is an 8x burner if it only burns well at 4x? LOL.

2. There isn't even enough information out there for me to bash it, and I'll bash anything.

I have 2 52x CD burners here that never burn anything (except test discs) at 52x. Not because they don't do a great job at it, but because I like a margin of error and the results are even better.
One of the most overlooked benefits of higher speed burners is that they generally do a better job of burning at ALL speeds. I can buy a Plex "Premium" and watch it burn at 40x even when it's set at 52x, or get a LiteOn and watch it burn at the speed I TOLD it to burn at. :P

Or you could always just turn off PoweRec, LOL. Besides, PoweRec is there to increase quality of the burned CD. If you want that extra 5 seconds you lost when PoweRec kicked in, turn it off, LOL.

EDIT:

Did I also mention that when it does kick in at say 40x, it's already been to about 45x'ish.

Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, that's what they said about 32x CD-RW media, and that sure isn't availible yet.

yeah, well, Ritek is already shipping 8x samples to suppliers, so I'd be surprised if more then a month goes by before we see 8x media available in some locations.

In Mr. Innundo's case, he is in charge of Lite-On customer support center for Worldwise-distributed products in South Korean market. So he can do almost anything... I got some free bezels and media (of course it costs more just to visit there for me.)

@tengkuei: An 811S EEPROM won't work (or at least not good) in anything else than that drive.

Normal users should NEVER be allowed to modify the EEPROM, so the relesae of ltnflash with EEPROM support is the worst thing that have happened in the Lite-On world so far.....

Just look at all the failed drives and requests for EEPROM's since stupid people messed up their drives with it......
