LiteOn LDW-451s

Postby David on Fri Nov 28, 2003 12:27 pm

This drive shows up here on the list of drives.
The link to the drive full specs currentl gives you a 404 error going by the specs listed with the other LiteOn DVD burners it's another.

4x +r
4x -r
4x +rw
2x -rw
40x cd-write
24x cd-rewrite
40x cd read

What makes this driver diffrent from the LDDW-411s who knows.

The 451S page is online now:

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/english/new ... 4440-5.htm

I can't see any differences between this one and the 411s :-?

It's probably the same specs, maybe with better DVD-R support, and just enough difference to make the firmware incompatible with the LDW-401s (completely, meaning no hacks either).... also a perfect excuse to completely drop support for the LiteON 411s... ARGH!

Hmm I was thinking why launching this new version.
I can think of 2 things.
1 Design has changed compared to 411S.- To make production cheaper.
2 Design has changed to make a new drive because of stopping reflashing in the future ! IN other words 411 users now pay for what has happened because of Lite On being stupide enough to make the 401S flashable to a 411S.

I asked one of my Lite-On contacts about this today. He wasn't 100% sure, but the 451 uses the same chipset as the 411. However, it uses a different PCB.

Firmware?

Postby Cerebus Jam on Wed Dec 17, 2003 11:30 am

I just got one of these drives, thinking it was a 411S (the Best Buy special for this week). I planned on upgrading the firmware for the 411S (based on the review @ cdfreaks), but now I can't find any firmware upgrade for the unit at all. I don't have any idea what version the current firmware is yet (just put it in last night).

TIA

I picked one of these up just this morning from BB, just now opened it to see the label on the bottom says "LDW-411S", Manufactured date:Oct 2003. Now I dont have my new computer yet to put it in to try it, but thats what this one has on the bottom.

Hello, I bought one of these drives and found out that it says LDW-411 on the box but when you hook it up and look in Device manager it shows as a ldw-451 After calling the Liteon tech supportline and waiting about 40 minutes to talk to someone the tech told me that they are very different
One the 411 is a DVD- and DVD+ burner
The 451 is only a DVD- burner
The 451 should be a cheaper drive.
And told me that he didnt even think that it would burn CD's
I havent tried to burn one but when I stick a CD blank in the drive it knows what it is
I was told by the tech that he thought that maybe the store repacked it wrong hmmmmmmmmmmm
I got mine from a PC club or EAPOWER depending on how you know them.
Where did you get yours?
If its from another store other then the fore mentioned then I would guess that Liteon made the oops
I am stuck.
I am unable to get a DVD to finish loading to my HD to burn it to test because mine is hanging at 99% then gets an error that it cant read the disk THIS IS B.S
How is yours doing and is anyone else getting this issue?

I doubt a company would redesign a drive just to prevent a small subset of users from flashing it with a different firmware. I'm not saying that door wasn't shut, but if it was it was probably secondary to some other reason for the redesign.

HELP PLEASE Liteon LDW-451S Problems

Postby Chewtoy on Thu Dec 18, 2003 3:11 pm

I just got this I tried to create a backup of a DVD for my kids they are killing me breaking the originals, Anyway
I am trying to use Xcopy express vers 3.0 I think and this this starts by coping the DVD to the HD It gets to 99% then errors out and says that its unable to read the disk
What the hey, it read the other 98%?
I tried Nero 6.0 the newest one waste of cash there It will copy the movie to the HD but then when you put in the blank in you get a message that its to big for the disk
I am a total Noob at this
I am a tech but no experience at DVD douplication.
I never had this much of a headache with CD's.
I am unable to find a Firmware update
Can Anyone offer any useful advice?

LOL. I'm sorry, but that is simply hillarious that Lite-On's own tech support didn't know anything about thier own drive. I don't normally go or not go to a company because of tech support, but that is ridiculous.

I got my 411 a few dyas after the last sale at BB started and when I heard about the 451s I took a chance and returned it and got the 451s, ( I know, my bad)

Right off the bat I got a bad burn. wqent in and checked my settings and the drive was set as slave, changed the jumper and its all good now. I cant tell the difference between the 411 and the 451s. Nero works great, just make sure ya have it set to dvd or cdrw, depending on what youre burning.

perhaps i'm missing something here.

The 401 is strictly a + burner
the 411 is a dual foramt burner
the 451 is a dual format burner as well

How does LITEON producing the 451 prevent people flashing a 401 drive to a 411 drive? I could understand if the 451 was a replacement for the 401 but it's not.

I think people are expecting support to be dropped for the LiteON 411s in favour of the 451s.

i guess that is possible but has lite on ever dropped support on CD burners with different model numbers, i.e. the various 52X burners they have. Most of the time firmware upgrades are across the board unless the burner is very out dated.
