MAGIC SPIN DVD+-RW/R/8X+4X-

Postby ETP on Sat Dec 13, 2003 8:50 am

Just had a heck of a sale at Office max. Got this generic drive for $119 after rebates. Out the door for $149.
OK! Who makes this drive? Nero shows generic! Anyone have one of these?

MAGIC SPIN DVD+-RW/R/8X+4X-

Postby tonto on Sat Dec 13, 2003 3:13 pm

The drive is an Optorite DD0401(model number on the drive). Very nice and well worth the money. I guess the sales tax in your area must be lower. In my part of Texas it's 8.25% mine was $162.00 out the door.
But, once the last rebate gets here (6-8 weeks......sure) then it won't be so bad!

Hey Tonto! Have you did a flash yet from optowrite? Mine is a little finiky on cd-r media and record speed. Also in Nero express it locks in at 4x. Nero burning rom will let me burn up to 40X from the HD with some media. Also my number of copies to record has disappeared!

Forgot the tax! $149 plus tax!
OK! It was the Dell DUDE! IDE's were not all set to auto. Wow! What a difference. This 8X drive so far is working fine. :D

Yeah, I've heard that I/OMagic changed the ID string so OptoRite's firmware updates wont work. There might be hacked updater out there somewhere.. anyone know?

Magic Spin Vs I/O Magic at OfficeMax

Postby nicktg on Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:04 pm

I got a MagicSpin. They sell both the MagicSpin and the I/O Magic. From what I read here I deduced that the I/O Magic is the rebagded Optorite. The MagicSpin's Part Number is R-DVDRW8D, and in DVDINfoPro only appears as Generic DVD burner. It's DVD -/+ 8x. Does anybody know who makes this or if there is a way to tell. There is also the word AccessTek Inc, under a sticker.

I believe it says 401 on the back of the case. Which means it is an optowrite. 40X for cd burn is very weak. I have found you need to kick it down a notch for a good burn.

Now 130e firmware is out!!! Merry Christmas!!, but optorites .exe firmware package wont update it due to .bin error, possibly listed as "generic dvd-rw drive" in device manager they used to give you the bin and a flash program, got smart and made it a .exe loader, anyone know how to extract the .bin file from there exe?, tried isobuster...no luck.
130e shows -R Sony 's burning at 8x!!!!!!!!, possibly beat liteon, plextor, following NEC's 2500 series drive with -R 8x burning.
I'm going to play around this morning with the firmware.

I have the MagicSpin 8x. I had to use the OEM version bios 130I. I flashed it just fine but DVD Identifier says it no longer supports HD Burn. I fired up Nero and sure enough I have no more HD Burn tab to select. So I flashed back to 120E and it shows HD Burn support again. I like this drive since my other DVD writer is DVD+RW 2.4x but the problem I have is that the disks it creates aren't playable in my old Toshiba DVD Player or and old 2x DVD-ROM from Creative. The other writer I have (NEC 1000A) will write the very same image and work great in both the old machines. I'm using the same media and writing the same speed but they wont work at all.

It was supposed to be out last month. However, I haven't heard a peep about it.
