107/A07 must be a hot item but....2500A is tempting

Postby flash on Thu Feb 05, 2004 2:31 pm

I've found someone to purchase my A06 and am looking into getting the
107/A07 as a replacement. There sure are a shortage of places out there
selling them and their prices are actually going up. I hate the whole supply vs. demand thing LOL.

Yeah, BB has the A07 for like $250. I am really hoping to get my hands on a 107 for around $150 from someone like Newegg or ZipZoomFly.
I should have clarified this in my post. Since I already have all the software from my A06 all I really need is the drive. Due to the shortage and by reading all the posts, I'm thinking seriously at the NEC 2500 for $112.

I looked at Pricewatch.com and there seemed to be a few online retailers who had the bare drive for around $160.

I appreciate you checking pricewatch. I am kind of a wimp when utilizing "online" etailers. I've been bitten more than once by companies selling items. I honestly use pricegrabber and user reviews weigh heavily on my purchasing decision. I have had VERY good luck with the "big" companies like newegg, buy.com etc. etc... The person wanting my A06 want it now soooo.... I have to buy something relatively quickly. Right now it's a toss up between the 107 and the 2500A. The 2500A is available now for cheap. I am generally using my burner to back up movies and if I now me I'll be getting a 12X when the cost drops and I can pawn off my 107 or 2500A.
All input is appreciated.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat. My DRU-500A has started making not-so-pleasant noises when the tray ejects so I've been looking at what to buy in the event it dies.

I was hoping to just wait until the dual layer burners are released and get one of those. But if I do have to buy before then, I am leaning towards the NEC 2500A drive since its down to $113.75 shipped and seems to be getting great user reviews.

But hopefully, I can just hang in there until dual layer burners ...

I agree. The 2500A seems to be the sweetest deal out there right now. It sure appears to be the way to go while waiting for 12X, 16X and dual layer.
Maybe I'm starting to talk myself into the 2500A...hhmmmm

I saw a Memorex "8x8" at Best Buy this week, had the exact same specs as the 107 with a $50 lower price.

Yep, it is a rebadged A07... except its black and gray.

Ok Ian, your opinion is very important to me because you are considerably knowledgable in the DVD arena. If you had a choice between the 2500A for ~$113 or the 107 for ~$155 which would be your choice. You'll be using the drive for basically backup of movies. You'll also be upgrading within 6 months to a faster drive. Which would you buy? I don't want to put you on the spot so if you prefer you can just pm me.
Thanks for any and all input you can give. :D

I really can't say. I have not had the pleasure of using the 2500A yet. However, from what I've read/heard the 2500A is a nice drive and for $113, you can't go wrong.

Thanks Ian, I appreciate your input. I'm figuring I'll give the Pioneer till early next week to drop in price, if it doesn't I'll jump on the 2500A.

If it's a rebadged Pioneer, who cares that it has Memorex's name on it?

I'm not a huge Memorex fan myself, I've seen them release cheap crappy rebadged CDRW drives. But it's widely acknowledged that the Pioneer 107 isn't cheap crap.

Memorex usually changes the ID string so Pioneer's firmware updates won't work. At least with the Dual-X (A06), you could change the ID string though.

Well I went ahead and ordered the 2500A from Newegg for $114 delivered. I've read some really good reviews for the unit and from what I can tell I shouldn't be dissapointed. I use my CD burner for CD's so any CD issues won't matter. I am just using Xcopy to back up movies so we'll see if my 1 1/2 hours to copy a movie time will decrease.

I've been happy with my 2500A whether it be DVD or CD burning. I need CD's to be read by lots of old ROM drives, so I often burn at 16x (or in some cases 8x) anyway to ensure best compatibility, though the drive has burned just fine at 32x. I have only done one DVD so far, but that's come out perfect; all my CD burns have been fine.

Wow, just checked Pricewatch.com and the NEC 2500A is down to $107 shipped. Crazy.

If this thing drops below $100, I'm ordering.

ok, now that staples started carrying the memorex true dual 8x (pioneer 107), is there any firmware out there for the memorex to make it a true pioneer, like hacked firmware, like there was with the memorex (pioneer 106)

i had the memorex which was the oem 106, and i did flash it to make it a true pioneer, if there is, then i will be buying staples's $24.99 plan for my NEC 2500a that i bought from ewiz.com, and on the same transaction, return the NEC and buy the memorex true dual (pioneer 107)

i'm sure it's just a matter of time.

besides, aren't there tools at www.rpc1.org that allow you to flash a rebadged Pioneer to true Pioneer? they had stuff like that for the 106.

Since we have the kernel and firmware for retail Pioneer drives, you can at least convert OEM drives to the hacked 1.05 version using DVRFlash to flash. Flashman's kits should be fine for both retail DVR-107D's and OEM DVR-107D's. I just had a look and it looks like we have a kernel and firmware for 1.10 as well so you should be able to convert to 1.10 if you want.

The key to converting OEM's is the DVRflash tool.

Yes. If it is a rebadged DVR-107D, then you can use DVRFlash to convert it to retail DVR-107D firmware.
