Has anyone tried Optodisc DVD+RW media (in spindles)?

Postby Phoenix '97 on Thu Jul 22, 2004 4:59 pm

I'm looking to buy a 25 spindle of these (4x) for about $43 Cdn.
I will most likely be writing to these with my 451S @ 832, but if not my 2500A with Herrie's latest. :)
Here's a link for the media at a local store...

(Hopefully a different crowd will see this post. ;) )

I have the LiteON 812s@832s, and the NEC 2500a w/ stock firmware, but can upgrade to Herrie's if needed. :D

Sorry I couldn't do any followup burns/tests, I didn't have much time yet, and now VS0A is out anyways... so I'll do a reburn on the same disc with the new firmware, and we'll see how it goes :D

Thanks for the graphs! They look pretty good, looks like I'll grab a pack of those in the near future. :)

As for the VS0A, it seems reading quality has improved a little bit... here is the same disc scanned yesterday and today with the different firmwares:

This is 1x Princo disc burnt 18 months ago, BTW. :)

that could just be normal variations too... this can also be affected by heat, either weather produced, or due to lot's of drive use.

The error rate went up quite a bit when tested at 12x, on the disc after I had burned it with the VS0A firmware... but also, it was no longer a virgin RW, so some quality loss is expected. I'm going to go back to VS08 and try re-burning the same disc again, and see if the error levels go down.

Thanks again for testing those, really my only other options for buying 4x DVD+RW media in a spindle are a 15 pack of Fuji or 25 pack of Memorex at the new Best Buy here. Though the prices they quote on their site are quite a bit higher per disc than what I would otherwise be getting, plus it's quite a trip from where I live (I take the bus. :p ) Anyone know who makes these discs?

Fuji is likely RicohjpnW11, Memorex is either RicohjpnW11, CMC MAG.W02, or PHILIPS.041. Of course Optodisc is made by Optodisc themselves

If you want less then 25pc spindles, check out NCIX.com who also carries the Optodisc DVDRWs (both 2x DVD-RWs and 4x DVD+RWs) but in 10pks. They also have pretty reasonable shipping rates. I'm not sure what they are selling them for right now, but I know they put them on sale from time to time at pretty good prices.

So I picked up a pack of the Optodiscs today and did some tests...
Here is one disc written to at 2.4x by the 2500A (it couldn't write at 4x :( ):
http://dwh1500.homestead.com/files/2500A.zip
And one disc written to at 4x by the 451S at 832S:
http://dwh1500.homestead.com/files/832S.zip
Note that the disc written in the 832S could not be recognized in the Toshiba DVD-ROM.

Those spikes near the end of the K-Probes worry me... the discs are readable but give high PI/PO errors there... when looking at the discs near the outer edge I see thin (~0.5mm) darker coloured rings on both sides of the disc... what are these?
The code on the discs is OTC+W84055N0 OP4

DAMMIT! ok... I'll look into this for you! perhaps it is downgrade discs, sold as 'A' grade. I don't know if this is the problem or not, but your results are VERY different from the discs that I sell.

If you give me your address, I'll send you some of my discs (gratis of course) and we'll see how they perform. If they work better, then I'll have solved your problem,

Mind you, if my media DOESN'T work better, I'll be really confused! :-?
