Need Advice

Postby jhigh2000 on Wed Oct 27, 2004 12:10 pm

I’ve been reading this forum and the reviews on this site for the past several days, and more confused than ever! :-?

I initially got an LG 4120B and immediately had problems with the drive intermittently not recognizing and *ANY* media (even brand new commercial DVD’s) that was inserted. It would just chirp and click with the green light flashing and then just sit there. Windows explorer would then change the description of the drive from DVD-RAM to a plain CD-ROM. After opening/closing the tray several times, discs would again be detected. Then all of the sudden it would stop again. I tired every firmware, but the behavior was the same. Very strange, since my 8520B CDRW worked flawlessly. Anyway…..

I thought I’d would get a Plextor (since I always thought they were the best) but now I’m reading in these forums that the PX-712A/PX-716A also have problems and should be avoided. ????

So I would like to ask for a recommendation…I’m just looking for a reliable burner that has good media compatibility…I would even be satisfied with 4x speeds at this point.

Thanks in advance!

716A should be showing up soon. New drives... generally a good idea to wait a month or so before buying. Generally it takes a firmware release and update to the burning software before everything is running hunky dory.

My advice, wait a few more weeks if you can, then look at the contenders.

Try either the Pioneer DVR-108 or NEC-3500A. Use the search function on the forum for more information.

Thanks for the recommendation!! Read the reviews and decided on the DVR-108.

Can someone recommend some good media for this drive that I can pick up at Best Buy? I have a project due, so I don't have time to cherry pick the best media online.

Thanks again for all the help!

Fuji 8x (made in Japan stuff). The spindles should be Taiyo Yuden.
