The story of the Princo 16x DVD-R (PRINCORGM1)

Postby dolphinius_rex on Fri Jul 28, 2006 2:52 pm

Everyone knows about Princo as a media manufacturer, and their reputation for most of their product being crap. But what most people DON'T know is that Princo once made a disc that was good. In fact it was REALLY good! unfortunately, it was also only 1 disc...

and thus was born, the PRINCORGM1 (Princo Really Good Media 1)

This one disc however quickly became famous among drive and other disc manufacturers. Everyone wanted to see the 1 Princo disc that was really good.

Shortly after the disc's creation, Princo shipped it off to NEC's ODD R&D department. The boys at NEC were really excited and impressed by this media, and gave it the highest speed rating EVER for a Princo disc... 12x. It is also important to mention that the NEC R&D guys burned the disc while they had it.

Next, Pioneer heard about the incredible performance of the PRINCORGM1 from their contacts at NEC (remember, Pioneer drives use NEC chipsets). We don't know whether or not the disc actually was sent to Pioneer, or whether NEC just shared their data with Pioneer, but we DO know that Pioneer was equally impressed with the results, that they gave it official firmware support as well!

Around this time, we believe the disc was returned to Princo.

Later on, a Canadian Distributor of Princo media (*THE* Official Distributor of Princo according to them) received the PRINCORGM1 disc from Princo as a sample. Unfortunately, this company had the mistaken impression that they could order STOCK of this item, whereas really Princo had sent it to them more as an point of interest. So this company went nuts promoting the new Princo 16x DVD-R disc, based on the information they received from Princo. But once they realized the only disc they had was already burned (by NEC, as mentioned above), and that they couldn't get any more of them, they were heart broken. In a fit of anger, instead of spreading the good news of the Really Good Disc, they told their customers when asked about it, that it simply did not perform as expected, and that they would not be stocking the product.

The disc itself has since been returned to Princo, and it is believed that it now site in a frame somewhere on a wall in their head office.

Thus concludes the story of the PRINCORGM1, Princo's 1 good disc.

This story is probably not true, but it IS based loosely on assumptions and hypothesese and the occasional fact. However, little to no information has come forward from any source to completely discredit it. That being said, please don't sue.

The firmware guys at BenQ seem to have heard the rumours about this Really Good Media, but LiteOn either haven't heard it or they don't believe it. ;)
Presumably, agreeing on this doesn't have top priority as part of the BenQ/LiteOn ODD merger...

Holy cow.. Wes lives!

But Wes' avatar looks a bit unhealthy to me.
