How fast is too fast?

JLMS XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM

I read a previous thread on this DVD-Rom which prompted me to bring up my problem.

I don't get any audio when using headphones. The headphones are okay. As expected, if I use the headphone jack on the speakers, the speakers cut out and I get the audio through the headphones.

I've looked at the downloaded manual, but it is very sparse and only shows the headphone jack and the volume adjustment.

Is there something that must be turned on somewhere? I'm using XP Pro right now, but I couldn't get the headphones working yesterday using a Linux OS.

You'll only hear audio through the front jack when playing an audio CD in the drive.
