Lite-On IT Requests Removal Of KProbe And LtnSSD

Postby Ian on Tue Jan 03, 2012 10:10 pm

Just got an email from Lite-On IT, asking us to remove KProbe and LtnSSD. I will probably remove LtnSSD as its an internal tool but KProbe? Seriously?

Why do they care about probe, I don't think anyone even uses it anymore and when was the last time they updated it? I used it back in the day but there are a lot of better tools now so?!

Yeah, I'm not sure what the deal is with KProbe. Maybe they feel it devalues their Plextor branded drives and Plexutilities? Like you said, there are a lot of better tools out there now. I've even stopped using it for reviews. As far as LtnSSD goes, its actually a very useful tool. As far as I know, its currently the only way to do a secure erase of a PLDS SSD outside of booting into Linux and using something like Parted Magic. Would be nice if they made a more consumer friendly utility available like OCZ and some others do.

Anyway, here was our response:

Dear Mr. Huang,

After consulting with our legal team, we’ve decided to remove LtnSSD from the download section of our website. With KProbe advertising itself as being “free and public software” we will not be removing it at this time. We understand that this “tool” was written by one of Lite-On’s employees. However, it has been publicly available for years and can be downloaded from thousands of websites.

Hopefully our removal of LtnSSD will satisfy your demands. If not, we look forward to hearing from you so that we can settle this amicably.

You would think they would be more concerned with modded firmware and flashers.

Ian, is your legal team the same guy that posed with the hat for your avatar?

Why not take down the KProbe, especially if it isn't mission-critical to CDRLabs? You could tell them you'll take it down if they give all of us free blu-ray burners and SSDs for life.
