Firmware upgrade for Lite-On LTN526D?

Postby SkaarjMaster on Sat Apr 10, 2004 6:37 pm

My Mom has this 52X CD-ROM and right now the firmware is YSR5 under Win98SE. I noticed firmware at Lite-On for the LTN526S as YSON. Is this the one I need for a firmware upgrade or should I not even bother?

My advice, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, if you want to peruse other firmwares for your drive, visit http://www.firmware-flash.com.

I don't seem to be able to get to that site right now with my Mom's computer. I was also wondering if the YS0N is the right firmware for the LTN526D because the Lite-On site says LTN526S?

The site is working; it may have been down when you previously tried.

Good question about the model number and firmware version; in situations like this, I take a look at the current firmware of the drive. For example, if your LTN526D has a current firmware of YH0K, YS0E, YS0F, YS0G, OU0J, or YS0J, then you know that falls under the LTN526S, therefore the next progression would be YS0N. If the drive has a current firmware of YH0X then you know that falls under the LTN526. I realize this is a crude way to figure out which drive you have, but it usually works. Note, I said usually. As I mentioned before, if there are no visible problems with the drive, then don't upgrade the firmware. No action, in this case, is the safest action.

Unless I find a definite answer, I'll leave it like it is for now. I got to that site at work today and it looks like the 526S firmware would work but still not sure. I'm DLing them anyway just in case I decide to do it. Anyone know for sure what's going on here?

This interesting little tid bit says this drive doesn't support flashing, so I guess that's the answer I was looking for. No wonder the drives were so cheap when I bought it for her, hehe. No big deal though, no problems yet.

I finished installing her system and didn't flash the drive as it may not support it. Everything's fine for now. This drive sounds like an airplane taking off though, hehe. 8)
