Slowing/Quieting DVD/CD drive

How fast is too fast?

Slowing/Quieting DVD/CD drive

Postby LoneWolf on Wed Feb 23, 2005 1:15 pm

I could technically ask this in the CD-ROM forum because it's about the CD portion of the drive, but since it's a DVD drive and I didn't know how quickly it'd be noticed and all...Anyways...

Just bought a used Pioneer slot-load 106S/2 DVD drive, 16x DVD, 40x CDR for a cheapie HTPC box I'm building. The DVD portion works absolutely fantastic. However, in CD-ROM mode the drive has an insanely high spindle speed resulting in the machine sounding like a Concorde preparing to taxi. I need to slow the CD-ROM drive down some, perhaps to between 16x and 24x to quiet this down so it isn't intrusive. DVDIdle Pro doesn't seem to do what I want; any other solutions out there?

Off the top of my head, I can think of 2 candidates: Erik Deppe's Drive speed http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroDriveSpeed_300.zip and what's probably the granddaddy of all these tools- CD-Bremse (google for that one). They don't work with all drives, though so you may be out of luck.

I found a solution! Better yet, it's actually by Pioneer for my drive:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/utilities.html

It can set my DVD max playback speed to 9x and my CD-ROM to max 24X. So far, it's really cut the noise level down on CD's, enough to play back DivX movies without distraction, and DVD's play just fine at 9x. It works with the DVD-116, DVD-106S and DVD-A06S drives.

I'm good to go. :D
