dvd burning problem

Postby leob on Tue Jan 05, 2010 2:24 pm

Hey,
I wanted to burn some dvd's today on my laptop, but the strange thing is that sometimes my disk drive doesn't recognize my dvd's. The strange thing is, that these dvd's that I try are all exactly the same and brand new, but only a few work. From a pack of 5 now 3 are not recognized by my laptop. This pack costs over 10 euros so it's kinda frustrating if only 2 work.

The disks are DVD+RW, 1-4x speed, single sided, and of the brand TDK.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P300 18M, with Windows Vista Home Premium on it. It should be able to burn DVD+RW's according to DVDInfoPro Xtreme (which is obvious because it has worked already). I just use the vista software to burn the dvd's.

It looks like the problem is with the DVD's, and not with the randomness of my laptop, because if I try a rejected disk later, it will still be rejected then.
But since they all are exactly the same and brand new (and I assume the shop isn't conning me with replacing some good disks in a pack with some faulty disks), should I then suppose it is my laptop that breaks the DVD's?
The problem is that I don't really know where the problem is :). Vista hasn't been too consistent, and so haven't I. Sometimes I try the Live File System (or so?), sometimes the mastered way. I am sorry that I can not give you a lot more info, but I have tried a lot now and my tries tend to blur into eachother. So I don't have an accurate timeline or so. What I do know is that of my first two disks, one worked and another didn't. Then my third or fourth worked too. So it isn't a broken down laser in my disk drive or so, that suddenly stopped working.

I really hope there is someone who has an idea about what could be the problem with the DVD's or with the laptop.

It could be the discs, but TDK's DVD+RW discs are usually pretty decent. Any idea who the real manufacturer is? You can figure this out through DVDInfoPro.

Worst case, your drive is failing and/or it doesn't like them. In this case, you'll probably need to try other discs to see where the problem lies.

Hey,
Trying it again, I seem to be able to solve it in a way that I don't really understand. The last two disks (previously rejected) I tried, just became visible to the laptop once I opened the DVDInfoPro software. I didn't have to click anything (the program wasn't even fully started yet since there is some BS that comes up first about registration and all), but suddenly the icon in 'my desktop' went from '(empty) station G' to 'Blank DVD'.
Although this seems to solve the problem for now, it does seem a bit silly to pay for an activation code, if I only need it to get my pc to recognize the discs. So I still hope that somehow there is another solution for this...

Anyways: DVDInfoPro tells me this about the discs (hope this is what you refered to in your post):

What software are you using to write to the discs? The stuff built into Vista?

Yeah, I just use vista to burn DVDs. It works well enough. Except of course when it doesn't find a disc.

Ok, little update: I have gotten my pc to recognize all the discs from the pack now. It went like I said: 'No Disc', *open DVDInfoPro*, 'blank DVD'

But that was yesterday :)

Today I check the disc that was still in the drive: Still 'blank DVD'
I try the other one just to be sure: 'blank DVD'
I get it out.
A few hours later: I like to burn something else.
I try the last one I checked and was OK: 'no disk'.
I open DVDInfoPro and now that says: 'No Media Found'. So even that now doesn't work anymore.

A few tries later DVDInfo says the dvd is of an unknown format and this is the media information it gives me then:

Media Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
MediaCode
Book Type DVD-RAM
Media Type DVD-RAM
Available Write Descriptor zCLV 2.0x 2770KBps

Track Density 0.615um/track
Number of Layers 1

Hope you can do something with this information.

Sorry, I'm stumped. The failure to recognize the blank disc is probably due to an issue with autorun/autoplay or something.

The unknown format thing is a weird one too. Do you have any other software installed on your system that may be causing problems?

hmm I have a lot of software on my pc :). Most of it I never use of course. Or it never worked, but I'm too lazy/cautious to delete or uninstall it.
Regarding DVD I have 'powerISO', 'DVDFab 5 Platinum', 'DeepDVD Movie', 'VLC', 'K-Lite Codec Pack', 'AC-3Filter', 'DVDVideoSoft', a lot of adobe stuff of CS3 and CS4 of which at least half doesn't work (anymore), 'RealPlayer' (but I can't burn anything since it's a free version) and then some stuff from Toshiba like 'TOSHIBA DVD player' and 'TOSHIBA DVD Movie Factory'.

You don't have any virtual disc programs installed, do you? Those things can cause problems like you're seeing.

Not that I know of...
There is 'PowerISO Virtual Drive Manager'.
But PowerISO is a perfect example of those programs that I don't really know what I used them for. Can't remember to ever have used it. Don't even know (anymore) what it does... :s

Should I uninstall and delete it or is it harmless/useful?
